A three-dimensional (3D) seismic data set is divided into a plurality of 3D source wavefield subsets, each 3D source wavefield subset is stored in an array element of an array. For each array element, the associated 3D source wavefield is decomposed into a smaller data unit; data boundaries of the smaller data units are randomly shifted; a folding operation and a sample operator is applied to the smaller data units to keep the smaller data units from overlapping; the folded smaller data units are smoothed to generate smoothed data; a quantization operation is performed on the smoothed data to produce quantized data; and the quantized data is compression encoded to generate compressed data. The compressed data associated with each array element is decompressed to generate a 3D seismic output image.

Compressing seismic wavefields in three-dimensional reverse time migration

A method of reducing surface-scattered noise includes receiving seismic data associated with a marine region, where the marine region includes an ocean bottom, a first zone including water above the ocean bottom, and a second zone including earth subsurface layers below the ocean bottom, and the received seismic data includes signals reflected from the earth subsurface layers and surface-scattered noise reflected from the ocean bottom and an ocean surface; determining a water velocity for the first zone; determining bathymetric values of the ocean bottom; based on the determined water velocity and the bathymetric values, determining a velocity model for the marine region; based on the determined velocity model and wavelet functions of seismic source signals, calculating the surface-scattered noise by solving a wave equation; and determining the signals reflected from the earth subsurface layers by subtracting the calculated surface-scattered noise from the received seismic data.

Surface-scattered noise reduction

The present disclosure describes methods and systems, including computer-implemented methods, computer program products, and computer systems, for modeling angle domain common image gathers (ADCIG) from reverse time migration (RTM). One computer-implemented method includes calculating seismic source and receiver wavefields based on seismic data, calculating characteristic source and receiver wavefields from the seismic source and receiver wavefields, calculating propagation angles for the characteristic source and receiver wavefields, applying a wavefield decomposition algorithm on the characteristic source and receiver wavefields to obtain corresponding directional source and receiver wavefields, the wavefield decomposition algorithm decomposing wavefield amplitude of a wavefield in an angle interval centered on a propagation angle of the wavefield, and forming ADCIG by applying an image condition to the obtained directional source and receiver wavefields.
