The invention relates to the field of optical fiber cables, and more particularly to the field of low cost optical fiber cables. It is an optical fiber cable comprising a central reinforcing element (), a plurality of optical fibers () surrounding the central reinforcing element (), the bare optical fibers () being pressed in contact against the central reinforcing element () in such a manner as to be mechanically coupled to the central reinforcing element (). The optical fiber cable of the invention is suitable for use in particular as a distribution cable or as an access cable in local networks.

A cable includes a tubular jacket which surrounds a plurality of protection tubes in which optical fibers are accommodated in groups and have a relative freedom of movement. These tubes are disposed in layers in which they are disposed in a helix. The cable includes at least one layer made up of an assembly of tubes which have an outside diameter smaller than that of the tubes of a layer that they surround and the tubes of the two layers all contain the same number of optical fibers.

Optical fiber cable, a method of manufacturing the optical fiber cable, and an installation for implementing the method

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing a tubular member made of synthetic material, the method being of the type in which the tubular member is extruded. In the method, during extrusion of the tubular member, the extruded synthetic material is subjected to a flow of water in liquid or steam form that comes into contact with the inside or the outside surface of the tubular member in such a manner as to form crevices in the surface of the tubular member that comes into contact with the flow of water. The extruded synthetic material is preferably subjected to a flow of water in liquid form. The surface including the crevices forms a low-friction surface. Application to making optical fiber cable networks in which the cables are inserted into tubes by carrying or blowing methods.

Method of manufacturing a tubular member made of synthetic material, and a tube and a sheath manufactured by the method

The invention relates to a telecommunications cable module comprising at least one optical fiber surrounded by a protective skin of a thermoplastic elastomer having flexible diol segments, and in particular a polyester thermoplastic elastomer. In the invention, the thermoplastic elastomer having flexible diol segments presents a melting point greater than 130&deg; C. and an initial resistance to tearing less than 60 kN/m. The material proposed by the invention is easily applied to fibers, in particular by extrusion.

Protective skin for optical fibers

The optical fiber cable includes an assembly of at least two flexible tubes accommodating optical fibers, a sheath enveloping the assembly of tubes, and at least one filamentary form strength member at the periphery of the assembly of tubes. The tubes preferably extend in the sheath in a helical or an SZ assembly. The tubes are stuck together. The sheath is preferably made of polyethylene and the tubes are preferably made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a thermoplastics elastomer with diol flexible segments. In this method, when extruding the sheath around the tubes, the temperature at which the material of the sheath is extruded is adjusted to cause the tubes to stick together.

Optical fiber cable and a method of fabricating the cable

The cable with optical fibers includes a filamentary strength member made of a material with a low coefficient of expansion in longitudinal contact with a contiguous member having a high coefficient of expansion. To increase the friction or adhesion between the strength member and the contiguous member, the strength member and/or the contiguous member has striations on its surface in contact with the other member. The striations for increasing friction or adhesion are preferably formed on the strength member or on the contiguous member using knurling means for knurling said member.

Optical fiber cable and a method of fabricating it

An optical-fiber cable includes an assembly of buffer tubes including at least two flexible buffer tubes that are held together compactly by adhesion to one another. The cable further includes a plurality of optical fibers, which are housed within the buffer tubes, a jacket surrounding the assembly of buffer tubes, and at least one longitudinal strength member that is provided at the periphery of the assembly of buffer tubes. According to one aspect, the jacket is formed of polyethylene, the buffer tubes are formed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a thermoplastic elastomer possessing flexible diol segments, and the buffer tubes are contained within the jacket in a helical or SZ stranding configuration. According to a second aspect, a fiber optic buffer tube includes low and high melting point materials forming domains and a matrix, respectively, and preferably further includes a filler. The domains are embedded in the matrix. The latter buffer tubes are bonded together by thermal activation of the domains.
