A writing instrument that includes an ink reservoir and a writing tip fluidly connected to the reservoir and through which the ink comes out during use of the instrument. The reservoir contains, in addition to the ink, grains that are separate and that may have angles and sharp edges of dimensions that are significant relative to an apparent dimension (d) of the grains.

A writing instrument, which has an inner and outer writing element with separate writing medium reservoirs. The writing elements are coaxially mounted in an outer barrel and axially moveable with respect to one another. A driving mechanism may be actuated to allow a user to selectively extend one writing element. The inner and outer writing elements may have an inner sleeve therebetween to improve, for instance, rigidity of the outer writing element and to prevent contamination of the writing medium reservoirs. An outer sleeve may also be provided over the outer writing element. The outer sleeve can function to hold various components of the outer writing element together, and to allow for clean and easy refill of the outer writing element, especially when the outer writing element is a nib-type writing element with a filler-type reservoir. The writing instrument is designed so that a user can replace the inner and/or outer writing elements when their respective writing medium have been expended.

The writing implement of the invention comprises: a) a body including an internal reservoir of ink and having a writing tip projecting from its front end; b) a capillary connector serving to transfer ink between the reservoir and the writing tip; and c) tip support arranged at the front end of the body to support the tip and assemble it with the capillary connector. The implement includes a compact one-piece capillary unit obtained by sintering thermoplastic powder, and constituting simultaneously the capillary connector and all or part of the tip support. The capillary connector and all or part of the tip support are constituted by a compact one-piece capillary unit preferably obtained by sintering thermoplastic powder.

The liquid ink writing instrument has a body containing, from its rear end towards its front end, a reservoir for the ink and a front chamber containing a capillary element for transferring ink coming from the reservoir to a writing head. The front chamber communicates with ambient air. The writing head is fed with ink by the capillary element, and projects from the front portion of the body. The reservoir is separated from the front chamber by a flexible wall having shape memory and provided with slots. The flexible wall acts as a valve suitable for opening when the ratio of the pressure inside the reservoir over the pressure inside the volume of the front chamber facing the valve exceeds a first value, and of reclosing instantly as soon as the ratio becomes less than or equal to a second value, the valve releasing the ink in the form of a jet directed towards the rear face of the capillary element. The first value of the ratio of the pressures is preferably about 1.07, and the second value of the ratio is preferably about 1.05. The writing instrument includes means for pressurizing the reservoir.

The nib is constituted by a segment of a coherent, elongate element of high porosity material, with at least a first end shaped to form a writing tip. The pores and/or capillaries of said material are blocked over a limited thickness e in particular in the range 0.01 mm to 1 mm, at the longitudinal outer periphery of the elongate element, with the exception of the first end forming a writing tip. In a first variant, blocking is obtained by a sealing agent and performed by continuously impregnating the elongate element with a sealing bath, and setting the agent. In a second variant, the nib is constituted by sintered microbeads and blocking is obtained by localized hot-melting of the microbeads.

To increase the anti-wettability of a body vis a vis a fluid the body is subjected in a treatment enclosure to a post-discharge nitrogen plasma. A fluorinated vapor is fed into the plasma on the input side or on the output side of the discharge cavity.

A buffer reservoir suitable for absorbing surplus ink and a writing instrument including the buffer reservoir are provided. The buffer reservoir includes a mixture of microbeads that are hydrophobic relative to the ink and microbeads that are hydrophilic relative to the ink. The mixture of microbeads may either be uniform throughout the entire volume of the buffer reservoir, or non-uniform throughout the entire volume of the buffer reservoir, with the proportion of hydrophilic microbeads to hydrophobic microbeads being smaller in the zone immediately in contact with the feed tip and larger in the zone farthest away from the feed tip. Preferably, the proportion of hydrophilic microbeads is in the range of about 2% to about 10%, by weight, relative to the total weight of the buffer reservoir. The writing instrument includes a reservoir for liquid ink, a feed tip opening out into the reservoir, and a buffer reservoir.
