Systems and methods are provided for planning placement of an acetabular implant for a patient based on pelvic tilt. The system includes one or more sensors to be placed on the patient to provide measurements of a pelvic tilt angle of the patient taken with the patient in various functional positions to produce patient-specific data based on pelvic tilt from which to plan an inclination angle and a version angle of the acetabular implant for the patient.

A method for avoiding impingement between an implanted prosthetic hip stem and acetabular cup uses at least one digital x-ray of a standing patient preferably including a lateral x-ray to determine a pelvic tilt angle of the patient. A hip stem is virtually implanted at an initial stem version angle into a virtual femur constructed from the digital x-ray. Data of at least one hip joint motion is obtained from at least one individual. A range of inclination and anteversion angles is calculated for a virtually implanted acetabular cup that avoids impingement with the virtually implanted hip stem. The calculated range of inclination or anteversion angles is based at least in part on the pelvic tilt angle of the patient, the initial hip stem version angle and the obtained joint motion data.

Prostheses that address stress shielding are disclosed. For instance, a knee prosthesis includes a monolithic femoral component having medial and lateral condylar elements for confronting and engaging a natural tibia or a bearing member of a tibial component, an intercondylar notch between the condylar elements for confronting and engaging a natural patella or a patellar component, and an anterior flange extending proximally from the medial and lateral condylar elements and the intercondylar notch. The femoral component defines a bone-facing surface and a bearing surface, the bearing surface including medial and lateral condylar articular surfaces defined by the medial and lateral condylar elements, respectively, and an intercondylar articular surface defined by the intercondylar notch. A slot extends through the femoral component from the bearing surface to the bone-facing surface, the slot starting at an edge of the femoral component and ending at a location within the anterior flange. Methods of making and using the prosthesis are also provided.

The invention includes a system, method and kit for preparation of a bone. One aspect of the present invention is a bone preparation system comprising a cutting instrument and a guiding element. The cutting instrument includes a distal attachment feature and a distal region. The guiding element includes a proximal attachment feature and a guiding surface. When the proximal attachment feature of the guiding element is engaged with the distal attachment feature of the cutting instrument, the cutting instrument can pivot about the proximal attachment feature until the distal region contacts the guiding surface.
