A light string system includes a plurality of LED's connected in parallel and a regulated power supply for providing a constant current and a constant voltage to the LED's. The light system may be used for decorative, signaling and a variety of other applications.

LED light string system

An optical communication system includes an optical transmitter for transmitting a subcarrier multiplexed optical signal through a single mode optical fiber to an optical receiver. The optical transmitter includes an optical source for generating a light beam. The optical source is preferably a high speed laser diode emitting in a spectral range of 1.3-1.6 micrometers. The light beam is intensity modulated with a composite modulation signal comprising multiple modulated microwave carriers. Each of the microwave carriers intensity modulates the light beam with a modulation index m.sub.i to provide the optical signal for transmission. The total modulation index M, defined by M=.SIGMA.m.sub.i, of the optical signal exceeds unity without degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio. By permitting the total modulation index to exceed unity, a large number of microwave carriers can simultaneously be transmitted, and the information-carrying capacity of the optical communication system is enhanced.

High performance subcarrier multiplexed optical communication system

Frequency modulated light is provided to an optical fiber by exciting a laser medium, such as a diode laser, so that stimulated emitted radiation, at a fixed wavelength .lambda., emanates from opposite surfaces of the medium. One end of the fiber is coupled to one of the surfaces. A reflecting medium is provided a distance (n.lambda.)/4 away from the other of the surfaces (n being a positive integer) to reflect emanated radiation from the other surface back to the other surface. The reflecting medium is oscillated in accordance with a signal to be modulated. The radiation reflected back to the other surface tends to cancel or reinforce, respectively, the radiation that emanates from the one surface, when n is an odd integer or an even integer, respectively. The reflecting medium can be a light reflecting diaphragm adapted to be acoustically oscillated.

Methods of and apparatus for providing frequency modulated light

A new method for increasing the modulation bandwidth of InGaAsP lasers is described herein. The method of the present invention is based on the gain enhancement doping of the lasers active layer. Lasers with highly doped active regions were demonstrated to have larger modulation bandwidths than lightly doped devices.

High speed InGaAsP lasers by gain enhancement doping

Apparatus couples optical fiber to an optoelectronic component with a collet, a cylindrical member, a connector, and hermetically sealing means. The collet has a central orifice through a knurled end portion, a central portion with a male thread, and a second end portion formed with a slotted cone sleeve. The cylindrical member has opposed centrosymmetric recesses that meet, forming a small axially oriented aperture. One recess is formed with an axial female thread, with a conical indentation terminating at the aperture. The female thread can to engage with the collet male thread. Thread engagement of member and collet results in engagement of the member at the conical indentation with the coned sleeve, drawing the slotted sides inwardly, firmly gripping the collet held optical fiber. The other recess has a second axial female thread from the opposite end of the member toward the aperture. The member has a radially directed sight hole. The connector couples the optoelectronic component to an electronic circuit. Its peripheral surface has a second male thread to engage with the second female thread of the member. Orientation of the collet held fiber with respect to the optoelectronic component can be varied by adjusting the second threads, with observation through the sight hole.
