An elastomeric gland is provided for a luer activating device (LAD). and comprises a unique lubricant and/or wetting agent and/or anti-clotting agent incorporated into the elastomer gland during raw material formulation, calendar blending/molding/curing to deliver the surface lubricity and/or wettability and/or avoid slit plane re-knitting and/or gland induced valve stick down of such devices Functional additive chemistries are selected in terms of generated functional performance level, thermal stability against processing, molecular migratability, molecular weight and elastomer substrate of interest. These additives could include lubricants like chemically modified silicone oils and/or wetting agents like silicone-based surfactant. Elastomer gland with wetting agent would ease fluid path priming and minimize micro air bubble adherence to gland surface. Additives may also include anti-clotting agents intended to reduce potential for clot formation within the fluid path and interstitial space of the valve during blood sampling and infusion.

A pre-slit injection site includes a housing with a flow path therethrough. A first end of the housing carries a pre-slit septum. One form of a blunt cannula, usable with the injection site, carries a locking member. When the pre-slit injection site slidably receives the blunt cannula, the locking member latches to the injection site and creates a mechanically coupled unit. Another form of the cannula includes a tube having a tapered distal end region and having elongate discharge slots for reducing contact surface area and for directing the flow laterally out of the cannula. The cannula may also include a rounded lead post, an annular barb, and axially oriented grooves.

A solution is described that can be used to maintain the patency of an I.V. catheter or other vascular access device having a lumen. The density and osmolarity of the solution are adjusted so that the density and osmolarity of the solution are approximately equal to the density and osmolarity of whole blood in a patient. The solution can be injected into the lumen of the vascular access device to prevent blood from the patient from entering the lumen.

Solution and method for maintaining patency of a catheter

A self-priming injection site having a stopper that resists dislocation or removal from the injection site. The stopper is positioned within the plastic housing between a top with an open center and an intermediate ledge having an upturned lip. The stopper includes an annular groove that receives the upturned lip of the intermediate ledge, to assist in holding the stopper in compression within the housing. An arm portion allows the intravenous fluid to enter the injection site on a path approximately parallel to and immediately adjacent to the ledge and the bottom of the stopper. A check valve may be positioned within the arm portion.

A spinal needle assembly in which means are provided for bridging the end cap of the obturator and the hub of the cannula to prevent relative axial movement between the obturator and cannula.
