The memory controller accesses the protected data with a combination of security operations that may include cryptography. The integrated circuit device may further include a wireless component for establishing a wireless connection with wireless computing devices or readers for wirelessly transmitting the protected data accessed by the memory controller to the wireless computing devices.

The integrated circuit device further includes a wireless interface for establishing a short range wireless point-to-point communication with wireless computing devices or readers for transmitting the protected data that is encrypted. The integrated circuit device functions as a security key requiring the presence of the integrated circuit device when accessing and using the protected data. The wireless integrated circuit device can be included in, or embodied as, any wireless communication device, such as a smart phone.

A portable device for phone calling, Internet access, or for playing media is herein disclosed and enabled. The portable device may support autorun. The portable device is connectable to a computing device over a wired interface for running, at the computing device, at least part of the software stored in the portable device. The wired interface includes, for example, a USB, a SD card, or an Ethernet among others. A wireless interface, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth&#xae;, may additionally be included. Exemplary services that may be deployed with the portable device include a phone calling service. Other exemplary services may include adding a wireless interface to a computing device, or providing a wireless Internet access service. Additional exemplary services may include outputting or playing of digital content from a smart phone to an output device, such as a printer, projector or television.

An integrated circuit microcontroller supporting Autorun of software or data is disclosed. The integrated circuit microcontroller can be included in a memory device, the memory device may be a USB dongle, a SD card, a flash drive, a wireless dongle or others that are connectable by a user to a computing device for running application or data stored in the memory device. The memory device may include a private memory component storing private or security data. The private or security data may be associated with computing or application software running or providing services on the computing device. The private or security data may protect the usage of or the services provided by the computing or application software. The computing device may include mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, laptops, desktops, appliances etc. Exemplary services may include Internet access, wireless connectivity, phone calling, content access or content sharing.

Memory controller that includes support for autorun of software or data

Autorun functionality is incorporated into a portable device such as a flash drive, a wireless adapter, a communication adapter, or any USB peripheral device. The portable device is connectable to a computing device (e.g. USB). The portable device may act as a security key to protect software or data running on the computing device from unauthorized use. At least part of the protected software or data may be stored in a protected memory component of the portable device which is not accessible by the user. Upon connecting the integrated circuit memory device to the computing device, the at least part of the protected software or data may run automatically on the computing device to enable the function of the protected software or data; whereby the user may run the protected software or data on the computing device while the portable integrated circuit memory device remains connected to the computing device.

Copy protection of software and/or data

Autorun functionality is incorporated into an integrated circuit memory device such as any USB peripheral, which has a memory component interfaced to a USB microcontroller. This provides autorun of one or more executables or application installers from a memory component with a USB interface without an intermediate hardware-based autorun feature. USB peripheral devices internally include a USB microcontroller that performs the functionality associated with identifying the device to a host computing device, such as a personal computer. Autorun firmware is embedded into the USB microcontroller. The autorun firmware enables autorun of an installable or executable application stored on the memory component of the USB device. The firmware acts as bridge component translating all commands and interactions between a host PC and the memory component.
