A vehicle control system and method includes identifying a type of route equipment disposed onboard a vehicle, and identifying one or more locations of a first classification of a pathway from among plural different classifications of pathways along a route. One or more first control settings for controlling operating of the vehicle at the one or more locations of the first classification of the pathway are determined based at least in part on the type of route equipment that is disposed onboard the vehicle and the first classification of the pathway. Operation of the vehicle is controlled according to the one or more first control settings to move the vehicle along the route at the one or more locations of the first classification of the pathway.

Vehicle control systems and methods

A system detects a parameter and generates a first trip plan to automatically control the vehicle according to a first trip plan. A controller is connected to a sensor and configured to receive the parameter. The controller is configured to generate a new trip plan or modify the first trip plan into a modified trip plan based on at least one of a cumulative damage or an end of life date. A new trip plan or the modified trip plan is configured, during operation of the vehicle according to the new trip plan or the modified trip plan, for at least one of an adjustment in velocity or avoiding one or more operating conditions of the vehicle, relative to the first trip plan.

Vehicle monitoring system

A system detects a parameter and generates a first trip plan to automatically control the vehicle according to a first trip plan. A controller is connected to a sensor and configured to receive the parameter. The controller is configured to generate a new trip plan or modify the first trip plan into a modified trip plan based on at least one of a cumulative damage or an end of life. A method includes receiving, at a data hub onboard an asset, a new configuration file, a service program, and a software update of a software application of the asset from a remote location. The data hub includes a current configuration file that indicates a current configuration state of the software application. The new configuration file indicates an updated configuration state of the software application with the software update. The service program includes work instructions for applying the updated configuration state to the software application. The method includes displaying the current configuration file and the new configuration file onboard the asset using the data hub. The method also includes updating the software application with the updated configuration state according to the work instructions of the service program using the data hub.

Monitoring system for detecting degradation of a propulsion subsystem

A power assignment system and method determine a needed amount of power for propelling a vehicle system along a route and identify propulsion-generating vehicles for inclusion in the vehicle system based on power capabilities of the one or more propulsion-generating vehicles. Handling parameters of the vehicle system are determined for different groups of the propulsion-generating vehicles, and the propulsion-generating vehicles in at least one of the groups are selected based on the handling parameters. The selected propulsion-generating vehicles are included in the vehicle system during actual travel of the vehicle system along the route during the trip.

Power assignment system and method for forming vehicle systems

A method for controlling coupler nodes in a vehicle system includes monitoring coupler forces between vehicle units in the vehicle system. The vehicle units include plural propulsion-generating vehicles. The method also includes identifying one or more nodes in the vehicle system based on the coupler forces. The one or more nodes represent one or more respective locations in the vehicle system disposed between a tensile section of the vehicle system experiencing a tensile force and a compressive section of the vehicle system experiencing a compressive force. The method also includes independently controlling tractive operations of the propulsion-generating vehicles based on the one or more nodes that are identified in order to control at least one of a number of the one or more nodes that are identified in the vehicle system or the one or more locations of the one or more nodes.

System and method for controlling coupler nodes in a vehicle system

A system is provided that includes a remote communication module, a control module, and a determination module. The remote communication module is configured to be disposed onboard a remote consist of a vehicle system, and is communicatively connected to at least one additional consist of the vehicle system. The control module is configured to be disposed onboard the remote consist and to provide control commands to at least one powered unit of the remote consist. The determination module is configured to be disposed onboard the remote consist and to determine capability information corresponding to the ability of the at least one powered unit of the remote consist to perform a first command received from one of the at least one additional consist. The determination module is also configured to determine a second command provided to the control module using the first command and the capability information.

System and method for communication and control in a vehicle system

A method includes monitoring an available amount of electrical energy on an electrical power grid for powering one or more loads at one time. The available amount of electrical energy represents an amount of electrical energy that may be consumed at one time without exceeding a grid capacity. The method also includes monitoring an electrical energy demand of plural electric vehicles traveling on a network of routes that includes one or more conductive pathways extending along the routes for delivering the electrical energy from the electrical power grid to the electric vehicles. The method further includes controlling movements of the electric vehicles such that the electrical energy demand of the electric vehicles does not exceed the available amount of electrical energy on the electrical power grid.
