One method includes receiving, by a mobile device, information from a passive tag located at an entrance to an area, wherein the information includes identification information for the entrance, sending, by the mobile device to a computing device of an access control system associated with the area, the information from the passive tag and a request to access the area, and granting, by the computing device of the access control system, access to the area based on the information from the passive tag and the request to access the area.
