In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a chemical lysis system is described. The chemical lysis system includes a microfluidic channel to serially feed individual cells from a volume of cells to at least one chemical lysing device. Each chemical lysing device includes at least one lysing chamber to receive, from the microfluidic channel, a single cell to be lysed. The chemical lysing device also includes an orifice disposed in each lysing chamber to receive a lysing agent and a sensor to detect a state within the lysing chamber. A controller of the chemical lysis system analyzes a ruptured cell.

Chemical lysis systems

In example implementations, an apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a dielectrophoresis (DEP) separator, an electrical field generator, a tracking system, and a controller. The DEP separator is to separate a plurality of different particles. The electrical field generator is coupled to the DEP separator to apply a frequency to the DEP separator. The tracking system is to track a movement of a type of particles in the DEP separator. The controller is in communication with the electrical field generator to control the frequency and the tracking system to track the separation. The controller is to calculate a cross-over frequency from a cross-over frequency distribution for the type of particles based on a frequency sweep performed on the type of particles and the movement of the type of particles that is tracked.

Examples herein involve sorting a droplet including a biologic sample. In a particular example, sorting a droplet including a biologic sample includes generating a droplet including a biologic sample and a pH sensitive surfactant, and heating a nucleic acid molecule in the biologic sample. The pH sensitive surfactant may change the surface tension of the droplet responsive to amplification of the nucleic acid molecule. The droplet may be sorted into one of a plurality of sorting lanes based on the surface tension of the droplet, where a sorting lane among the plurality of sorting lanes is associated with droplets including the amplified nucleic acid molecule. A determination of whether the droplet includes the amplified nucleic acid molecule may be performed by detecting passage of the droplet in one of the plurality of sorting lanes.

Sorting a droplet including a biologic sample

An example system includes an array of retaining features in a microfluidic cavity, an array of thermally controlled releasing features, and a controller coupled to each releasing feature in the array of releasing feature. Each retaining feature in the array of retaining features is to position capsules at a predetermined location, the capsules having a thermally degradable shell enclosing a biological reagent therein. Each releasing feature in the array of releasing features corresponds to a retaining feature and is to selectively cause degradation of the shell of a capsule. Each releasing feature is to generate thermal energy to facilitate degradation of the shell. The controller is to selectively activate at least one releasing feature in the array of thermally controlled releasing features to release the biological reagent in the capsules positioned at the retaining feature corresponding to the activated releasing feature.

In example implementations, an apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a channel, an energy source, and a transfection chamber. The channel includes an indentation to hold a cell. The energy source is to apply a shockwave to the cell in the channel to porate the cell. The transfection chamber is to store a reagent to be inserted into the cell after the cell is porated.

In an example implementation, a reagent storage system for a microfluidic device includes a microfluidic chamber formed in a microfluidic device. A blister pack to store a reagent includes an electrically conductive membrane barrier adjacent to the chamber. A thinned region is formed in the membrane barrier, and a conductive trace is to supply electric current to heat and melt the thinned region. Melting the thinned region is to cause the membrane barrier to open and release the reagent into the chamber.

Microfluidic devices

A three-dimensional object modeling method may include applying a nonrotating nonuniform electric field to apply a dielectrophoretic torque to a three-dimensional object to rotate the three-dimensional object, capturing images of the object at different angles during rotation of the object and forming a three-dimensional model of the object based on the captured images.

An example system includes a well plate having at least one well, an array of electrodes positioned on a surface of a bottom floor of the well, and a controller to direct electrical voltage to the electrodes to generate a non-uniform electrical field. The electrical field is to direct an object in the electrical field to a target position in the well.

In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a cell sorting device is described. The cell sorting device includes a microfluidic channel to serially transport individual cells from a volume of cells along a flow path. A sensor disposed in the microfluidic channel distinguishes between a cell to be analyzed and waste fluid. The cell sorting device includes at least two fluid transport devices disposed within the microfluidic channel. The at least two fluid transport devices include a cell ejector to, responsive to detection of a cell to be analyzed, eject the cell to be analyzed from the cell sorting device and a waste transport device to direct the waste fluid to a waste reservoir.

A particle classification system may include a volume to contain a fluid having a suspended particle, electrodes proximate the volume to apply an electric field to rotate the suspended particle, a focused light source, a scattered light sensor to sense light from the focused light source that has scattered upon impinging the rotating suspended particle and a controller to classify the particle based at least in part upon signals from the scattered light sensor.

A system and a method for imaging microfluidic ejectors during operation. An example provides a microscopy system, that includes a plurality of microfluidic ejectors. A mirror is disposed in a droplet path of the plurality of microfluidic ejectors, wherein the droplet path passes through an opening in the mirror. An optical system is focused on the plurality of microfluidic ejectors through the mirror, wherein the optical system comprises a camera.

Microscopy systems

A system includes a microchannel analysis region, a first fluid actuation device, a second fluid actuation device, a sensor, and a controller. The first fluid actuation device is at a first end of the microchannel analysis region. The second fluid actuation device is at a second end of the microchannel analysis region opposite to the first end. The sensor is within the microchannel analysis region between the first fluid actuation device and the second fluid actuation device. The sensor measures an impedance of a fluid within the microchannel analysis region. The controller activates the first fluid actuation device to generate a first pressure wave in the fluid and activates the second fluid actuation device to generate a second pressure wave in the fluid. The first pressure wave and the second pressure wave converge at the sensor.

Cell analyzers

An image formation device includes a support, a fluid ejection device, and a first porous element. The support is to support movement of a substrate along a travel path, while the fluid ejection device is located along the travel path to deposit droplets of ink particles within a liquid carrier onto the substrate to at least partially form an image on the substrate. The first porous element is located downstream along the travel path from the fluid ejection device to be in contact against the substrate to remove, via electroosmotic flow through the first porous element, at least a portion of the liquid carrier from the substrate.

A particle monitoring system may include a flow passage, a particle imager to image a targeted particle within the flow passage, electrodes supported proximate the flow passage, a power source connected to the electrodes and a controller to cause the power source to charge to electrodes so as to (1) apply an electric field balanced with respect to gravity so as to hold, levitate and rotate a targeted particle within the flow passage during imaging and (2) release the targeted particle following the imaging.
