A fully integrated power amplifier (PA) employing a transformer combiner with enhanced back-off efficiency includes a first PA to amplify a first radio frequency (RF) signal and a second PA to amplify a second RF signal. A first variable capacitor is coupled between differential output nodes of the first PA. A second variable capacitor is coupled between differential output nodes of the second PA. The differential outputs of the first PA and the second PA are coupled via respective first and second transformers to a load. Capacitance values associated with the first and second variable capacitors are dynamically adjustable based on an amplitude of the RF signal to achieve a desired power efficiency at an output power level.

In one embodiment, a method comprising during a first calibration instance, converting at a first transconductance stage a first output voltage from a power amplifier of a transceiver to a first set of current signals; and during a second calibration instance not overlapping the first calibration instance, converting at a second transconductance stage a second output voltage from the power amplifier to a second set of current signals.

The generated one or more feedback signals may be inserted at a corresponding one or more insertion points in an RF receiver. Each insertion point may be between a receiver mixer circuit and corresponding circuits that generate a baseband signal based on the corresponding one of the feedback signals.

Aspects of the system may include at least one circuit that enables generation of an output signal in response to one or more generated input signals. A feedback signal may be generated within a single feedback mixer circuit that may perform a frequency mix-down operation on the generated output signal. The generated feedback signal may be inserted at one or more insertion points in a receiver. Each of the insertion points may be located between a mixer stage of the receiver, and one or more circuits that generate a baseband signal based on the generated feedback signal.

Disclosed are various embodiments for transmitting radio frequency signals. A radio frequency transmitter may be configured to generate an analog signal comprising an in-phase component and a quadrature-phase component. The in-phase component and the quadrature-phase component of the analog signal may be provided to multiple radio frequency processing chains. One of the radio frequency processing chains may generate an output radio frequency signal based on the in-phase component and the quadrature-phase component.

A method and system for wireless communication is provided and may include generating a single analog quadrature signal in a chip including RF transmitters and receivers using a baseband processor, and generating output RF signals based on the quadrature signal in corresponding RF transmitters. The output RF signals may be communicated to the RF receivers via a feedback path including circuitry external to the RF receivers. The dedicated circuitry may include a transmit/receive switch and/or an on-chip or off-chip balun. The quadrature signal may include in-phase and quadrature-phase components. The output RF signal communicated via the feedback path may be down-converted utilizing mixers in the RF receivers and communicated to the baseband processor. Distortion in the quadrature signal may be estimated utilizing the communicated down-converted output RF signals and subsequently generated quadrature signals may be predistorted based on the distortion estimation.

Aspects of a method and system for enhancing efficiency by modulating power amplifier (PA) gain are presented. Aspects of the system may comprise a PA gain modulator that enables modification of an amplitude of a digital baseband signal. A baseband processor may enable computation of a first gain value based on the modification. The baseband processor may enable computation of a second gain value based on the first gain value. A PA may enable generation of an RF output signal based on the modified digital baseband signal and the second gain value.

Method and system for enhancing efficiency by modulating power amplifier gain

Various aspect of a system for a linearized transmitter including a power amplifier may include at least one transconductance amplifier that enables generation of a single analog quadrature signal. Transmitter mixers may enable generation of a plurality of upconverted RF signals in a corresponding plurality of RF processing chains based on the generated single analog quadrature signal. In various embodiments of the invention, a gain stage, for example gain stage, may also be referred to as an RF processing chain. Power amplifier circuit may enable generation of a corresponding plurality of RF output signals within a wireless communication system based on the generated plurality of upconverted RF signals.

Aspects of a method and system for a highly efficient power amplifier (PA) utilizing dynamic biasing and predistortion are presented. Aspects of the system may include a processor that enables computation of a value of a variable bias component of a bias current based on a bias slope value and an amplitude of an envelope input signal. The processor may enable computation of a value of the bias current based on the selected constant bias current component value and the variable bias current component value. A PA may enable generation of an output signal in response to a generated baseband signal by utilizing the bias current to amplify an amplifier input signal. The bias current may be generated based on the envelope input signal. A feedback signal may be generated based on the output signal, which may be used to predistort a subsequent baseband signal.
