The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for supplying electrical power to a transport refrigeration unit. The apparatus comprises: a power converter including a rectifier, a first inverter and a DC link; a power distribution unit electrically coupled to the DC link; and a second inverter with an input for electrically connecting to an electrical generator and an output for electrically connecting to the power distribution unit or the DC link. The DC link is electrically connected to an output of the rectifier and an input of the first inverter. An input of the rectifier is electrically connectable to a power source external to the apparatus. An output of the first inverter is electrically couplable to the transport refrigeration unit. The second inverter is configured to convert an alternating current voltage supplied at the input into a direct current voltage for supply at the output.

Apparatus comprising an inverter

An optimized power converter for use in a transport electrical system that provides power to a transport climate control system is provided. The optimized power converter includes an optimized DC/DC converter and an inverter/active rectifier. The optimized DC/DC converter is only boosts a voltage level when current is directed from a rechargeable energy storage to the inverter/active rectifier and only bucks a voltage level when current is directed from the inverter/active rectifier to the rechargeable energy storage. In a charging mode, the inverter/active rectifier converts three phase AC power into DC power, and the optimized power converter bucks the DC power to a voltage level that is acceptable for charging the rechargeable energy storage. In a discharge mode, the optimized DC/DC converter boosts voltage from the rechargeable energy storage, and the inverter/active rectifier converts boosted DC power into three phase AC power for powering a transport climate control system load.

Optimized power management for a transport climate control energy source

A method for power and load management of a transport climate control system using a vehicle electrical system is provided. The method includes a controller determining a power draw of the transport climate control load network, determining an amount of power available from the vehicle electrical system, and determining whether the power draw of the transport climate control load network exceeds the amount of power available from the vehicle electrical system. Also, the method includes shedding one or more loads of the transport climate control load network to reduce the power draw of the transport climate control load network until the power draw of the transport climate control load network matches the power available from the vehicle electrical system. Further, the method includes supplying power from the vehicle electrical system to the transport climate control load network.

Methods and systems for power and load management of a transport climate control system

A method for managing energy to a transport climate control system from a vehicle electrical system is provided. The vehicle electrical system includes a vehicle power network and an auxiliary power network connected to a transport climate control load network via a DC regulated bus. The method includes monitoring a vehicle voltage of the vehicle power network and determining whether the vehicle power network requires holdover assistance based on the vehicle voltage. Also, the method includes the bus sending vehicle power energy generated by the vehicle power network to the transport climate control load network without assistance of the auxiliary power network when the controller determines that the vehicle power network has sufficient power capacity available, and the bus sending the vehicle power energy and auxiliary power energy stored by the auxiliary power network to the transport climate control load network when the controller determines that the vehicle power network requires holdover assistance.
