A network element is disclosed. In accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure, a network element may comprise a network interface configured to communicatively couple to a network, and a controller communicatively coupled to the network interface. The controller may be configured to determine a delay-measurement interval, and to perform a plurality of delay measurements at a respective plurality of randomly determined times within the delay-measurement interval. Performing a delay measurement may comprise sending an outgoing signal, receiving an incoming signal, and determining a delay time based on the outgoing signal and the incoming signal.

Proactive delay measurement for optical transport network

A method of network communications includes determining an access identifier (AID) for an egress signal through a network interface of a network element, an Optical Transport Network (OTN) multiplexing structure identifier (MSI) associated with the egress signal through the network interface, another AID associated with a defined ingress signal through the network interface, another OTN MSI associated with the defined ingress signal through the network interface, and associating the egress signal and the defined ingress signal based on the AIDs and OTN MSIs. The first OTN MSI is not equal to the second OTN MSI.

Asymmetric OTN network traffic support

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, a method for identifying a target signal in an optical transport network frame structure may be provided. The method may include determining an Access Identifier (AID) for the target signal. The method may also include determining at least one attribute for the target signal. The at least one attribute may define at least one of an Optical Transport Network (OTN) multiplexing structure associated with the target signal and one or more attributes associated with one or a higher order or an intermediate higher order optical data unit entity for a supporting entity of a lower order optical data unit associated with the target signal. The method may further include identifying the target signal based on the AID and the at least one attribute.

System and method for identifying a target signal in an optical transport network frame structure

Systems and methods for identifying a fault location in an optical network are disclosed. In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, a method for identifying a fault location in an optical network comprises monitoring, by a network element, an eastward optical path and a westward optical path for faults. The method further comprises transmitting, by the network element, a first data packet along the eastward path and a second data packet along the westward path. The first and second data packets comprise an eastward fault indicator and a westward fault indicator comprising information associated with any eastward or westward faults occurring on the eastward or westward paths. The fault indicators indicate the existence of an eastward or westward fault and the network element that detected the fault.

Identifying fault locations in a network

Determining an active/standby state for an interface unit includes determining an entity active/standby state for each entity of one or more entities of the interface unit. If each entity active/standby state is standby, then an aggregated active/standby state of the interface unit is established to be standby.
