A storage management application of a storage array is operable to create a new volume on the storage device array, and to automatically configure, responsive to user selection of an application protection profile, data protection services for application data to be stored on the volume, and/or, responsive to user selection of an application performance profile, application specific performance parameters. The application protection profile specifies scheduling and replication of snapshots for application data to be stored on the volume, and the application performance profile specifies performance parameters such as setting a block size, enabling or modifying a data caching algorithm, turning on or modifying data compression, etc. The scheduling, replication and/or application performance may be managed by a daemon associated with the storage management application which communicates with an agent associated with an application server on which the application executes.

Methods and systems for managing the replication of snapshots on a storage array

Described herein are methods for transitioning control between a first and second controller of a storage system. In such transition, the first controller transmits a message to a memory element shared by the first and second controllers, the message capable of notifying the second controller of an imminent failure of the first controller. The second controller receives the message from the shared memory element, the message notifying the second controller of an imminent failure of the first controller. Subsequent to transmitting the message to the shared memory element, the first controller becomes unavailable to facilitate access to the storage devices of the storage system. Subsequent to receiving the message from the shared memory element, the second controller becomes available to facilitate access to the storage devices of the storage system.

Technologies for monitoring system API calls include a computing device with hardware virtualization support. The computing device establishes a default memory view and a security memory view to define physical memory maps and permissions. The computing device executes an application in the default memory view and executes a default inline hook in response to a call to an API function. The default inline hook switches to the security memory view using hardware support without causing a virtual machine exit. The security inline hook calls a security callback function to validate the API function call in the security memory view. Hook-skipping attacks may be prevented by padding the default inline hook with no-operation instructions, by designating memory pages of the API function as non-executable in the default memory view, or by designating memory pages of the application as non-executable in the security memory view. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

A system for volume replication in a distributed block virtualization environment includes a first and a second set of one or more physical block devices, a first and a second volume server, one or more volume clients, and a replication manager. The first volume server may be configured to aggregate storage in the first set of one or more physical block devices into one or more logical volumes, and to make the one or more logical volumes accessible to the one or more volume clients. The replication manager may be configured to operate in cooperation with the first and second volume servers and the one or more volume clients to maintain a replica of at least a subset of the one or more logical volumes at the second set of one or more physical block devices.

System and method for volume replication in a storage environment employing distributed block virtualization

A method, system, computer system, and computer-readable medium that identify the number of times areas of storage are updated and use that information to synchronize primary and secondary storage areas. The invention enables quick resumption of operations upon a discovery that primary and secondary data have become unsynchronized. Regions of storage that are unsynchronized can be identified quickly without the need to read the change log. In addition, data are copied efficiently, with minimal or no duplication of effort or data. Faster and more reliable storage can be allocated for storing regions of data that are 'hot spots,' thereby making better use of existing storage resources and budgets.

Maintaining spatial locality of write operations

Disclosed is a method and system for performing periodic replication using a write-ordered log. According to one embodiment, a plurality of write operations to a primary data volume are tracked using a write operation log and then data associated with the plurality of write operations is replicated to a secondary data volume by coalescing the plurality of write operations utilizing the write operation log and transferring data associated with the plurality of write operations to the secondary data volume. According to another embodiment the described tracking includes storing metadata associated with the plurality of write operations within the write operation log. In another embodiment, the described coalescing includes identifying a non-overlapping portion of a first write operation and a second write operation of the plurality of write operations utilizing the metadata.

Method and system for performing periodic replication using a log

A control facility that allows a non-programmer to use and manipulate replicated data without disrupting replication of the data itself. The control facility can be used and customized for a variety of software applications and storage platforms. These customized control facilities can enable a system administrator without application- or storage system-specific knowledge to perform off-host processing of the replicated data, such as taking snapshots of the data and running Decision Support System reports. In response to a single user command during replication of data from a primary node to a secondary node, the following steps are performed: obtaining a control message from the primary node, wherein the control message is associated with a control command for execution on the secondary node; and automatically executing the control command on the secondary node.

A method and mechanism for modifying computing resources in response to application behavior. A computing system includes a replication component configured to replicate data storage from a first data volume to a second data volume. In addition, the replication component is configured to monitor application I/O characteristics and store related statistics. I/O characteristics may include size, concurrency, locality, and frequency. I/O characteristics which are stored, and guidelines for modifying system resources based on those characteristics, may be displayed for use by an administrator in tuning system resources. Periodically, or in response to detecting an event, the replication component may automatically access the statistics and modify the system resources used by the replication system to better accommodate the application's behavior.

Disclosed is a method and system for performing periodic replication using a log and a change map. According to one embodiment, a first region and a second region of a primary data volume are identified and a plurality of write operations to the primary data volume are tracked by tracking write operations to the first region utilizing a storage replication log and tracking write operations to the second region utilizing a storage replication change map. Thereafter, data associated with the plurality of write operations is replicated from the primary data volume to a secondary data volume utilizing at least one of the storage replication log and the storage replication change map.
