Methods and systems for treating an olefin-containing stream are disclosed. The disclosed methods and systems are particularly suitable for treating an off-gas stream in a refining or petrochemical process, such as from a fluid catalytic cracker (FCC), coker, steam cracker, and the like. The stream is treated in an absorber column to reject lighter stream components and to absorb ethylene and/or propylene into a solvent. The solvent is typically isobutane. The enriched solvent stream from the absorber column is fed to an alkylation reactor, which reacts the dissolved olefin with the isobutane solvent to produce an alkylate product.

Systems and methods for separating one or more olefins are provided. In one or more embodiments, the method for separating one or more olefins can include separating at least a portion of one or more Cand heavier hydrocarbons from a hydrocarbon containing Cto Chydrocarbons to provide a first mixture that can include methane, ethane, ethylene, and/or acetylene. At least a portion of the first mixture can be hydrogenated to convert at least a portion of the acetylene to ethane and ethylene. At least a portion of the methane can be separated from the hydrogenated mixture to provide a second mixture that can include ethane and ethylene. At least a portion of the ethylene can be separated from the second mixture to provide a first product that can include at least 95 mol % ethylene and a second product that can include at least 95 mol % ethane.

Methods and systems for separating olefins

Processes to separate a light hydrocarbon stream comprising ethylene, ethane, and C3+ hydrocarbons into an ethylene stream, an ethane stream, and a C3+ hydrocarbon stream, including: feeding the light hydrocarbon stream to a deethanizer; separating the light hydrocarbons in the deethanizer to form a C3+ hydrocarbon bottoms stream and a C2-rich overhead stream comprising ethylene and ethane; separating the C2-rich stream in a C2-rectifier to form a first ethylene stream and an ethane-rich bottoms stream; and separating the ethane-rich bottoms stream in a C2-splitter to form a second ethylene stream and an ethane stream.

Methods and apparatus for the integration of a fractionation process and an olefin refrigeration system, wherein the fractionation process olefin effluent is supplied to the refrigeration system, can eliminate a fractionation process condenser and reflux drum typically present. A plurality of bottoms streams can be collected from the fractionation process. The olefin refrigerant can be supplied to alternate olefin refrigerant consumers, as desired. A column in the fractionation process can be refluxed with an olefin stream from refrigeration system, and olefin product can be collected or exported via line.

Integrated olefin recovery process

Apparatus and processes for quenching a pyrolysis furnace effluent are provided. In one embodiment, a hydrocarbon stream comprising gas and oil vapor can be quenched with a first quench water stream to form a mixed vapor-liquid stream. The mixed vapor-liquid stream can be fed to a water quench tower to separate the vapor and liquid. The separated vapor can be further quenched with a second quench water stream in the quench tower to form an overhead vapor product comprising light hydrocarbons. Water and liquid hydrocarbons can be collected from the quench tower in an oil-water separator. The liquid hydrocarbons can be recovered from the oil-water separator. Water can be recovered from the oil-water separator. A portion of the recovered water can be cooled. The cooled water can be recycled to the first and second quench water streams.

A low-pressure olefins recovery process and plant are described. The feed gas is compressed and distilled at a primary distillation pressure. The overhead stream is chilled at a pressure less than 30 kg/cm2 (430 psia) to partially condense the overheads. The primary distillation tower is refluxed with at least a portion of the condensate. The overhead vapor is further chilled and partially condensed and the condensate is fed to a demethanizer. The remaining vapor is cooled in a cold section and the resultant liquid is phase-separated and expanded to provide refrigeration for the cold section. The expanded vapor from the cold section is recycled to the process gas compressor. The bottoms streams from the primary distillation zone and the demethanizer are fractionated into respective streams consisting essentially of ethylene, ethane, propylene, propane, C4's, and C5+.

Low pressure olefin recovery process

A low-pressure olefins recovery process and plant are described. The feed gasis compressedand distilledat a primary distillation pressure. The overhead streamis chilledat a pressure less than 30 kg/cm(430 psia) to partially condense the overheads. The primary distillation toweris refluxed with at least a portion of the condensate. The overhead vapor is further chilledand partially condensed and the condensateis fed to a demethanizer. The remaining vaporis cooled in a cold sectionand the resultant liquid is phase-separatedand expandedto provide refrigeration for the cold section. The expanded vaporfrom the cold section is recycled to the process gas compressor. The viscosity of quench oil circulated in a pyrolysis fractionation unit is controlled by contacting pyrolysis furnace effluent with a slip stream of 0.1-0.5 kg/kg of the quench oil, separating the resulting vapor-liquid mixture to remove tarry liquid, and feeding the remaining vapor to the fractionator. Removing the tarry liquid from the fractionator feed in this manner allows operation of the fractionator with less reflux, a higher bottoms temperature, and more heat recovery at a higher temperature.

Quench oil viscosity control in pyrolysis fractionator

A hybrid condensation-absorption process and unit is disclosed for the recovery of olefins. A mixed-component stream containing hydrogen, methane and olefins is compressed and refrigerated against propylene refrigerant to partially condense the stream. The condensate is stripped of volatile components and fed to a fractionation unit such as a deethanizer. The volatile components stripped from the condensate and the non-condensed vapor from the mixed-component stream are fed to a solvent absorption unit to remove olefins which are absorbed in the solvent. The olefins-rich solvent is regenerated to recover olefins and lean solvent. The lean solvent is recirculated to the absorption unit. The olefins recovered from regeneration of the solvent are fed to the fractionation unit along with the pre-stripped condensate. Vapor from the absorption unit is cryogenically processed to recover a crude hydrogen product, a fuel gas product and residual olefins which can be recycled to the absorption unit. The hybrid process eliminates the need for low temperature (ethylene) refrigeration equipment, generally required by conventional condensation-based olefins recovery technology, and substantially reduces the solvent recirculation rate to the absorption unit and eliminates hydrogen expansion as compared to conventional absorption-based technology.

Hybrid condensation-absorption olefin recovery

A method is described for recovering olefins by condensation from the reaction effluent stream from a cracking furnace containing olefins and hydrogen wherein a membrane separator is employed to reject the hydrogen from the reaction effluent stream. In such a manner, the dew point temperature of the stream can be increased and the energy required to provide refrigeration for olefin condensation can be reduced. The method comprises primary condensation, vapor-liquid separation and membrane hydrogen rejection steps followed by a series of cascaded chilling and vapor-liquid separation steps. Condensate recovered is processed in a demethanizer to separate light end components. Also disclosed is an olefins plant employing a membrane separator for rejecting hydrogen to enhance the energy efficiency and/or facilitate the expansion of plant capacity.

Olefin recovery method

An enhanced method is disclosed for recovering olefins from a cracking furnace effluent stream in an olefins plant. In accordance with this method, a liquid hydrocarbon stream, preferably obtained from the compressor area drier liquids and/or from the deethanizer or depropanizer, is injected into the reaction effluent stream to condition the reaction effluent stream for enhanced condensation against propylene refrigeration. Also disclosed is an olefins plant utilizing liquid hydrocarbon injection and an improvement to existing olefins recovery process technology using liquid hydrocarbon injection for vapor stream conditioning.
