Technologies for eliminating duplicate data provisions within a storage system supporting boot consolidation can efficiently identify duplicate data provisions within a data storage system and eliminate duplication by remapping duplicate provisions to point to the same physical storage space. Signatures of provisions within a storage system may be calculated and compared. Matching, or collisions, within the list of provision signatures can indicate candidate provisions for de-duplication. De-duplication territories may be provided as an indirect mapping mechanism in support of the remapping of duplicated provisions. Access statistics associated with provisions within a storage system may be collected. Access statistics can support the scheduling of de-duplication processes. Data de-duplication can support substantial storage space consolidation and significantly improve caching efficiency within a data storage system.

Eliminating duplicate data in storage systems with boot consolidation

Technologies are described herein for providing bi-directional communication between redundant storage controllers in a storage system. One of the storage controllers operates in the initiator role over a point-to-point communication channel connecting the controllers, while the other operates in the target role. To transmit a function call from a storage module executing on the initiator storage controller to a corresponding module executing on the target storage controller, the initiator storage controller issues a write command to the second storage controller over the point-to-point communication channel. In order to transmit a function call from a storage module executing on the target storage controller to a corresponding module executing on the initiator storage controller, the target storage controller responds to a pending anticipatory read command sent from the initiator storage controller over the point-to-point communication channel.

Bi-directional communication between redundant storage controllers

Technologies for high capacity storage servers with thin provisioning can support an increased storage capacity and an increased number of snapshots within a data storage system while maintaining a reduced memory footprint. Flexible virtual address translation can support both direct, and indirect, translation from a virtual address to an address in physical storage. A data structure, referred to as a volume table, may be provided for supporting the virtual to physical address translation. Multiple volume tables for the various volumes within a data storage system can be stored together in a global volume table. Granularities of storage allocation units, such as territories, provisions, and chunks can be reduced to improve efficiencies in the operation of the storage system. Processes for handling volume and snapshot I/O operations with various data structures can contribute to improved efficiencies while supporting increased storage capacities and an increased number of snapshots.
