A method may include selecting a first set of values for a first set of parameters of one or more hardware components of an ice-making machine; identifying a water temperature at a water inlet of the ice-making machine; identifying an ambient air temperature surrounding the ice-making machine; calculating a second set of parameters of the ice-making machine based on at least a portion of the first set of values, the water temperature and the ambient temperature, the second set of parameters corresponding to operation of the ice-making machine in a freeze mode in which liquid water is cooled by an evaporator; and calculating a third set of parameters based on at least a portion of the first set of values, the water temperature and the ambient temperature, the third set of parameters corresponding to operation of the ice-making machine in a harvest mode.

Ice machine including vapor-compression system

A system includes a compressor driven by a motor. A condenser receives working fluid from the compressor. An evaporator is in fluid communication with the condenser and the compressor. A first sensor produces a first signal, and a second sensor produces a second signal. A processing circuitry processes the first signal and the second signal to determine a new baseline freeze time. The processing circuitry determines the new baseline freeze time for a predetermined time following an installation event, a service event, or a power outage of the compressor.

Refrigerant charge detection for ice machines

A system includes a compressor driven by a motor. A condenser receives working fluid from the compressor. An evaporator is in fluid communication with the condenser and the compressor. A first sensor produces a first signal indicative of one of current and power drawn by the motor. A second sensor produces a second signal indicative of a discharge line temperature. A processing circuitry processes the first signal and the second signal to determine a freeze time. The processing circuitry processes the freeze time, the current signal, and the discharge line temperature signal to determine a working fluid charge level.

A method of computer-based simulation of a cooling system includes receiving configuration data for a heat exchanger of the cooling system, customizing the configuration data for the heat exchanger; simulating cooling system performance by processing the customized configuration data through a model of the cooling system, and generating simulated cooling system performance data, based on the simulating, for evaluating operation of the cooling system.

Cooling system design simulator

A system and method for configuring a condensing unit for a cooling system includes inputting one of a cooling system characteristic, a condensing unit characteristic and a compressor characteristic for the cooling system, applying embedded design rules and accessing a condensing unit database of component attributes and their relationships. A base condensing unit is determined based on the one of a cooling system characteristic, a condensing unit characteristic and a compressor characteristic for the cooling system. The method further includes selecting various accessories of the condensing unit for customizing the base condensing unit based on the particular application.

Condensing unit configuration system

A method of computer-based simulation of a cooling system includes inputting condenser parameters, evaporator parameters and compressor parameters for the cooling system and processing the condenser parameters, the evaporator parameters and the compressor parameters through a model of the cooling system. A flow control device is selected based on an output of the model.

A system and method of computer-based configuration of a condensing unit for a cooling system is provided. A list of condensing units is generated based on a selected starting path. A condensing unit is selected from the list of condensing units and reconfigured based on desired criteria. The starting paths include a change an existing product path, a search by own specification path, and a cross competitive product path.

A system and method for determining thermal performance of a condensing unit includes selecting the condensing unit from a condensing unit database and a compressor from a compressor database. Condensing unit characteristics and compressor characteristics are processed based on simulation points to provide thermal performance data for the condensing unit.

Condensing unit performance simulator and method

A method of determining thermal performance of a condenser and a condensing unit within a cooling system includes selecting the condenser and the condensing unit from a condensing unit database. A compressor is selected from a compressor database based on at least one of capacity, electrical characteristics and refrigerant flowing through the cooling system. Simulation points for the cooling system are determined and condensing unit characteristics and compressor characteristics are processed based on user-specified simulation points to provide thermal performance data for the condenser or condensing unit.

Compressor discharge temperature, ambient outdoor air temperature and thermal load are used as control parameters for controlling the expansion valve setting and indoor fan speed. Diagnostics monitor a feedback signal from the fan motor to detect fan over-speed and increased speed due to decreased air flow caused by a dirty indoor air filter. Discharge pressure of the compressor is monitored to detect a blocked outdoor fan. The difference between actual and optimum compressor discharge temperatures and suction pressure of the compressor are monitored to detect a stuck-closed expansion valve or low refrigerant charge. Compressor 'short-cycling' is limited to prevent reduced reliability of the compressor. The difference between compressor discharge temperature and outdoor coil temperature is measured before and after startup to detect compressor failure.

Diagnostics for a heating and cooling system

The microprocessor-based HVAC control system detects sensor faults by comparing thermistor readings with predetermined extreme values, indicative of sensor fault. The system automatically selects the appropriate combination of automatic/preset modes of operating key system components such as the expansion valve, the demand defrost system and the indoor fan speed control system. With a view towards minimizing any negative impact on system performance and reliability in the event of sensor malfunction.

Heat pump motor optimization and sensor fault detection

Compressor discharge temperature, ambient outdoor air temperature and thermal load are used as control parameters for controlling the expansion valve setting and the indoor fan speed. In a variable capacity system the thermal load parameter also controls the compressor capacity. Thermal load is measured by an integrating procedure that increments or decrements an accumulated demand counter value used as an indication of thermal load on the system. The counter value is incremented and decremented based on the room temperature and thermostat setpoint. These same parameters are also used in the overcharge/undercharge diagnostic system.

Heating and cooling system with variable capacity compressor

Liquid refrigerant temperature, measured by a sensor adjacent the flow control device, provides multiple diverse pieces of information which are used to control the indoor fan speed. liquid refrigerant temperature is used as an indication of outdoor air temperature and is also used as an indication of whether the compressor is operational or not.

Forced air heat exchanging system with variable fan speed control

The blocked fan or obstructed airflow condition is detected by measuring the difference between outdoor air temperature and outdoor exchanger coil temperature. If a very high difference is detected, or if no decrease in the difference is achieved after termination of the defrost cycle, and if either of these conditions persists over a plurality of defrost cycles, then the blocked condition is declared. The diagnostic system can be integrated in an existing demand defrost cycle and is capable of detecting blocked conditions attributable to foreign matter such as leaves, paper and debris which cannot be cleared by defrosting.
