Toothpaste compositions are disclosed. The toothpaste composition comprises a binder; a surface active agent; an abrasive; a humectant; and water; in which: (1) the abrasive is silica, the composition additionally comprises a silica thickener, and the composition comprises 1 to 7 wt % of the silica thickener, less than 15 wt % of the silica abrasive, 45 to 70 wt % water, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of a surface active agent; 0.05 to 3.0 wt % the binder; or (2) the abrasive is silica, the composition additionally comprises a silica thickener, the composition comprises 2 to 22 wt % total silica, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of a surface active agent; 0.05 to 3.0 wt % the binder, and the composition additionally comprises about 0.1 to 8.0 wt % of non-colloidal microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal microcrystalline cellulose, or a mixture thereof; or (3) the binder is a calcium based abrasive, the binder is a cellulose gum, and the composition comprises 25 to 55 wt % of the calcium based abrasive, 35 to 60 wt % water, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of the surface active agent, and 1.0 to 3.0 wt % of the binder.

Toothpaste compositions with reduced abrasivity

The present invention is directed to a carrageenan product comprising a semi-refined, alkali treated iota carrageenan wherein the semi-refined, alkali treated iota carrageenan has: (i) a viscosity of 18 cP to 83 cP, (ii) a particle size of at least 90% passing through a #100 US sieve mesh and at least 20% passing through a #230 US sieve mesh, and (iii) a fraction of sodium cations of at least 35%, wherein the fraction of sodium cations is determined by the weight of sodium cations divided by the sum of the weight of sodium cations and potassium cations. This invention is also directed to toothpaste compositions comprising the carrageenan product of the invention.

Carrageenan products and method for their production and use

Toothpaste compositions are disclosed. The toothpaste composition comprises a binder; a surface active agent; an abrasive; a humectant; and water, in which: (1) the abrasive is silica, the composition additionally comprises a silica thickener, and the composition comprises 1 to 7 wt % of the silica thickener, less than 15 wt % of the silica abrasive, 45 to 70 wt % water, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of a surface active agent; 0.05 to 3.0 wt % the binder, or (2) the abrasive is silica, the composition additionally comprises a silica thickener, the composition comprises 2 to 22 wt % total silica, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of a surface active agent; 0.05 to 3.0 wt % the binder, and the composition additionally comprises about 0.1 to 8.0 wt % of non-colloidal microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal microcrystalline cellulose, or a mixture thereof; or (3) the binder is a calcium based abrasive, the binder is a cellulose gum, and the composition comprises 25 to 55 wt % of the calcium based abrasive, 35 to 60 wt % water, 0.8 to 3.0 wt % of the surface active agent, and 1.0 to 3.0 wt % of the binder.

The present invention is directed to a toothpaste composition comprising a binder, an abrasive, a foaming agent, water, and polyethylene glycol, wherein the binder comprises semi-refined carrageenan. The toothpaste composition has improved shelf life.

Toothpaste composition

Described herein is a toothpaste composition which comprises an orally acceptable vehicle, a polishing agent, a surface active agent and a binder, the binder containing kappa carrageenan and a cellulose gum, the percent by weight concentration of binder being in the range of about 0.30 to 0.80%, and the ratio of kappa carrageenan to cellulose gum being in the range of about 25:75 to 75:25. A preferred concentration of binder is in the range of about 0.45 to 0.65 and a preferred ratio of kappa carrageenan to cellulose gum is in the range of about 55:45 to 75:25. The toothpaste is surprisingly non-stringy, exhibits good consistency, transparency and physical stability.

Non-stringy toothpaste

A stable, high moisture toothpaste has now been developed that comprises a carrageenan binder that is at least 70% iota carrageenan, a calcium based-polishing agent, humectant, surfactant, water and optional additives and therapeutic actives used in dentrifice compositions. The calcium-based agent is present at a weight percent concentration in the range of about 35 to 50, the water is about 35 to 50%, the humectant is about 5 to 15%, the carrageenan is about 0.5 to 0.85%, and the surfactant is about 0.5 to 5%. The high moisture, low cost toothpaste that is provided has favorable physical properties such as good viscosity and stability without the need for additional binder which is optional.
