An indication of the virtual machine of a primary site to be restored at a remote site using a copy stored at the remote site of a backup data of the virtual machine of the primary site is received. Methods and apparatuses to determine similarity among data lifecycles of data sets protected via a backup store having one or more storage devices are described. Each data set may be associated with one data lifecycle indicating a schedule to store one or more copies of the data set in the storage devices. The backup store can have one or more polices. Each life cycle may be specified in one of the policies. Two or more of the policies may be consolidated into one single policy specifying an updated data lifecycle. In one embodiment, the updated data lifecycle and data lifecycles of the two or more polices may be similar according to the similarity determined. A particular one of the data set may be associated with one of the data lifecycles of the two or more polices. The storage device may be configured to back up the particular data set according to the updated data lifecycle of the one single policy.

Methods and apparatus for data lifecycle analysis

A dispatcher framework to provide non-blocking inter-application communication is disclosed. In various embodiments, a call to a service that is blocking with respect to the service is received from a calling process. The service is called on behalf of the calling process in a manner that does not require the calling process to remain blocked during at least a portion of a time during which the call to the service is performed.

Dynamically adjusting a block size in a data transfer operation is disclosed. An indication that a data transfer operation has commenced is received. A first portion of data is read using a first read block size. A first throughput associated with the first read block size is determined. A second portion of data that is different from the first portion of data is read using a second block size that is different from the first read block size. One of the first and second read block sizes is used to complete the data transfer operation based on a comparison of the first throughput and a throughput of the second read block size. This process can be repeated several times as necessary.
