The present invention relates to an anisotropic films and method for obtaining the same. The film comprises substrate and at least one modified conjugated aromatic crystalline layer deposited onto said substrate. The said layer is characterized by globally ordered crystalline structure with intermolecular spacing of 3.4&#xb1;0.3 &#x212b; along one of optical axes. The modified conjugated aromatic crystalline layer is formed by rodlike supramolecules, which comprise at least one polycyclic organic compound with conjugated &#x3c0;-system. At least part of the modified conjugated aromatic crystalline layer has electric conductivity and is slightly soluble or insoluble in polar solvents. The films are useful in optical applications, such as polarizers and retarders, and in electronic and light emitting devices, such as fiber optics modulators and switches, solar cells, charge-coupled device (CCD), thin film transistor integrated circuits, light emitting diodes, and light emitting displays. The invention features the use of organic compounds for manufacturing thin crystal films useful in various applications.

Anisotropic film manufacturing

Sulfoderivatives of perylenetetracarboxylic acid dibenzimidazole are provided. These compounds form liquid crystal systems possessing high quality optical properties. The resulting liquid crystal systems are readily applicable onto a substrate to obtain optically isotropic or anisotropic, at least partially crystalline films applicable in various fields.

Anisotropic films based on sulfoderivatives of perylenetetracarboxylic acid dibenzimidazole (PTCA DBI) which contain oxo groups pendant to a perylene core. The oxo-groups, in combination with portions of the perylene core, form a quinoid system of bonds. The oxo substituted PTCA DBI sulfoderivatives form liquid crystal systems possessing high optical properties. Said liquid crystal systems can be applied onto various substrates to obtain optically isotropic or anisotropic, at least partially crystalline, films applicable in various fields.

The present invention relates to organic chemistry, in particular, to synthesis of sulfoderivatives of the polycyclic compounds and fabrication of optically anisotropic coatings on their base. The indanthrone sulfoderivatives of the general structural formulas I or II capable of forming LLC phase are disclosed. The disclosed compounds could be used, in particular, for producing optically isotropic or anisotropic and at least partially crystalline films. The application also includes the liquid crystal systems based on the disclosed compounds, and anisotropic films.

The invention pertains to methods of obtaining anisotropic crystalline films and to devices for carrying out the methods. A colloidal system with anisometric particles is applied as a film onto the surface of a substrate while the viscosity of the colloidal system is lowered. The particles of the colloidal system with lowered viscosity are oriented and the original viscosity of the colloidal system is restored. The film is then dried. The drying is carried out under controlled conditions. Zones of the dried film may be progressively heated to improve the film characteristics.
