A steerable medical device is used to controllably introduce a guidewire or other medical instrument into a body of a patient and direct placement of the guidewire or other medical instrument in the body of the patient. The steerable medical device can include an elongated member, a steering mechanism, and an attachment member. The elongated member extends along a longitudinal axis and comprises a deflectable distal portion that is deflectable off of the longitudinal axis. The steering mechanism is adapted to control longitudinal and rotational movement of the elongated member and to control off-axis deflection of its deflectable portion. The attachment member is removably couplable to another medical device. The attachment member is moveably coupled to the steering mechanism and the elongated member.

Steerable medical device

A device is for thermal treatment of tissue. The device includes (a) an elongated member extending from a proximal end to a distal end insertable to a target position within a body; (b) a housing coupled to the distal end of the elongated member sized and shaped for insertion to a target organ within a living body, the housing including an opening permitting fluid surrounding the housing to enter the housing, the housing further including first and second deflecting elements shaped to diffuse pulses of fluid directed thereagainst; and &#xa9; a piezoelectric element mounted within the housing between the first and second deflecting elements. The piezoelectric element is oriented to generate pulses in liquid received within the housing toward the first and second deflecting elements.

Ultrasound heater-agitator for thermal tissue treatment

A device for heating tissue, comprises a housing sized for insertion through a naturally occurring body orifice to a target location within a lumen and a heat generating element within the housing focusing thermal energy on a target area separated from an outside of the housing so that, when the housing is in the target location, the target area is within tissue surrounding the lumen at a predetermined depth from a lumenal wall in combination with a temperature sensing element sensing data corresponding to a temperature of tissue in the target area and a processor controlling the heat generating element in response to the data sensed by the sensing element.

Device for thermal treatment of tissue and for temperature measurement of tissue providing feedback

A device for heating target tissue comprises a housing, an array of ultrasound transducers and a deflector member. The housing includes a tissue contacting surface. The array of ultrasound transducers is mounted within the housing on an array surface shaped so that ultrasound energy from the transducers converges on a target area a predetermined depth from the tissue contacting surface. The deflector member is located at a selected position within a field through which a portion of the ultrasound energy generated will pass on its way to the target area. The deflector member refracts a selected portion of the ultrasound energy to control a distance of separation between the array and a proximal edge of a region at which a level of ultrasound energy exceeds a predetermined threshold level.

Device for controlled tissue treatment

A device for treating tissue comprises an enlongate probe and a light delivery unit illuminating a target area with light within a first wavelength band selected to enhance identification of target tissue in combination with an ultrasound crystal mounted at a distal end of the probe, the crystal being stimulated to treat target tissue identified using the light delivery unit.

Device and method for detecting and treating lesions

In one embodiment, an apparatus may include an endoscopic housing defining an opening disposed along a plane substantially normal to a longitudinal axis of the endoscopic housing. A rotatable member may be coupled to the endoscopic housing and may have a proximal portion configured to move from a stowed configuration to a deployed configuration when the proximal portion of the rotatable member is rotated about an axis substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of the endoscopic housing. The proximal portion of the rotatable member may be disposed on a distal side of the plane when in the stowed configuration and disposed on a proximal side of the plane associated with the opening when in the deployed configuration.

Method and apparatus related to a flexible assembly at a distal end portion of a medical device

In one embodiment, an endoscope includes an elongate member having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion. The distal end portion is configured to be inserted into a body lumen. An electrical component is disposed within the distal end portion of the elongate member and configured to produce a signal. An elongate conductive mechanical component has a proximal end portion and a distal and portion. The distal end portion of the elongate conductive mechanical component is electrically coupled to the electrical component and configured to conduct the signal or electrical power from/to the electrical component to/from the proximal end portion of the elongate conductive mechanical component.

A method and a device to deliver heat and mechanical agitation in a liquid with ultrasound. The method and device may be used for thermal treatment of tissue within a living body, the device comprises a housing extending from a distal end to a proximal end, the housing including a first opening exposing an inner chamber of the device to the fluid, the housing being sized and shaped for insertion to a target location within the body and a piezoelectric element fixed within the housing and generating pulses of ultrasound energy directed substantially along a longitudinal axis of the housing in combination with first and second deflecting elements, the first deflecting element being mounted within the housing on a distal side of the piezoelectric element, the second deflecting element being mounted within the housing on a proximal side of the piezoelectric element, the first and second deflecting elements deflecting a portion of ultrasound energy from the piezoelectric element away from the axis of the housing so that the deflected ultrasound energy exits the housing via the first opening.

A system comprises a first signal handling unit sized and shaped for insertion to a reference distance within a first body cavity and a probe sized and shaped for insertion into a second body cavity the probe including an energy emitting head and a second signal handling unit, wherein one of the first and second signal handling units comprises a transmitter and the other of the first and second signal handling units comprises one of a receiver adapted to receive signals from the transmitter and a signal reflecting element, wherein, when the other of the first and second signal handling units comprises a signal reflecting element, the one of the first and second signal handling units comprises a receiver in combination with a controller operatively connected to the receiver, the controller generating an output varying as a distance between the first and second signal handling units varies. In addition, a system comprises a probe sized and shaped for insertion in a first body cavity and a measuring element extending from the probe to contact tissue adjacent to an opening to a second body cavity, the measuring element being movably coupled to the probe to vary a depth to which the probe may be inserted into the first body cavity before the measuring element contacts the tissue adjacent to the opening of the second body cavity.

Device and method for positioning of a therapeutic device

A stent crimper is formed of at least one crimping member disposed in a reducible diameter loop. The crimping member includes at least one pulling member extending from the loop. The diameter of the loop is reduced by pulling on the pulling member. A stent placed in the loop may be crimped by reducing the diameter of the loop.
