A DC circuit breaker arrangement for interrupting a direct current on a line, includes: n DC circuit breakers connected in parallel, where n&#x3e;, which parallel connection of DC circuit breakers is connected in series with the line, the direct current of the line being divided between the n DC circuit breakers, and n reactors, each reactor being connected to one of the DC circuit breakers, for preserving the current division during current interruption. A method for interrupting or commutating a direct current on a transmission line or in a HVDC circuit is also provided.

High voltage direct current circuit breaker arrangement and method

A DC circuit breaker arrangement for interrupting a current on a transmission line or in a HVDC circuit is provided. The DC circuit breaker arrangement comprises a first DC breaker and a second DC breaker, identical to the first DC breaker. The second DC breaker is connected in parallel with the first DC breaker on the transmission line or in the HVDC circuit and the current is divided between the first and the second DC breakers. By means of the invention, a DC circuit breaker arrangement is provided able to handle very high currents. The invention also relates to a corresponding method.

A high power d.c. breaker for connection into a d.c. carrying high-voltage line (L), has two normally closed and electrically series-connected mechanical breaks (BSI, BSII) adapted to be traversed by the line current (I) and to be opened for breaking the current. A capacitor (CB) is connected in parallel with the series connection of the breaks. A semiconductor member (HO) is connected in parallel with one of the breaks (BSI). Upon opening the breaks, a control member (SO) controls the semiconductor member such that a zero crossing of the current through the second break (BSII) is obtained, whereby the line current (I) is commutated over to the capacitor.
