A punch press ram drive is described in which a reversible electrical servo motor is coupled to a crankshaft having an eccentric journal driving a pitman arm connected to the ram. The electrical servo motor is operated by program controls so as to either cause rotation or oscillation of the crankshaft to drive the ram through various programmed stroking modes, in which punch position, velocity, acceleration, varying over the course of a stroke may be programmed.

A right angle shear press in which the upper blades are able to be positioned at a partially retracted park position and moved to a partially extended position to match the size of the shear cuts to a reduced stroke. A servocontroller and position sensor is used to control the stroke of a hydraulic actuator with a CNC controller allowing program controlled shear positioning and stroking.

An automated workpiece rotation is accomplished by clamping the workpiece, to the lower turret of a turret punch press in the press carriage grippers and rotating the turret 180.degree. to reorient an oversized workpiece in order to enable completion of a punching program on the workpiece. The turret is positively located in each rotated position, and the degree of tilt of the rotated sheet in the press carriage grippers is determined by edge detectors.

A punch press having a rear address configuration is described in which a forward facing carriage cross slide is mounted within the throat space of a punch press main frame and an auxiliary turret frame mounts the punch and die rotary turrets separately from the main punch frame, avoiding the need to prevent turret misalignment by main frame deflection during punching. Separate turret modules also allow matching different turret configurations to various punch press configurations. A turret module having different diameter independently driven upper and lower turrets is also disclosed, allowing a greater number of dies than punches to be stored to allow any several dies to be mated with a particular punch for proper punching with various materials.

A stripper arrangement for a punch holder which uses an external thread on an end section of the punch holder body to mount either a plastic sleeve press fitted over the external thread or a replaceable steel stripper disc held against the end face of the end section with a steel retainer sleeve threaded onto the external thread. In a first embodiment, a soft tipped set screw secures the steel retainer sleeve. In an alternate embodiment, an O-ring engages the inside of the retainer sleeve to retard unthreading due to vibration, which O-ring also engages the plastic stripper sleeve to augment the friction exerted by the press fit over the external threads.

A sheet material hybrid cutting apparatus has a laser beam cutting head mounted side-by-side with a plasma arc cutting head on a shuttle carrier plate movably mounted to enable positioning of either cutting head a single cutting station. The cutting heads are mounted in a punch press with a punching station offset from the cutting station to provide punching of a sheet material workpiece moved across a table by a carriage as well as contouring by either of the laser beam or plasma arc cutting heads.

A punch tool selection and orienting arrangement is disclosed in which a multiple tool holder and a rotary ram are separately driven to select and orient a single punch tool beneath the rotary ram for a punching operation. A non-positive connection effects driving of the preselected marking tool (46) to eliminate the need for precise adjustment of the marking tool position. In a first embodiment, a pair of very stiff springs (138) are interposed between a ram engaged plunger (124) and a striker (70), while in the second embodiment, a striker mass (158) attached to the striker (70) and carried in a body member (60) which is accelerated by the ram (14) to generate kinetic energy converted into a marking pressure when the marking tool (46) impacts the workpiece (W).

A punch holder is described having a stripper arrangement composed of an annular array of nested coil springs housed within a series of aligned facing bores in a punch holder tang and punch holder body to generate a high stripping force in a compact space. A threaded removal ring is employed to force a press fitted stripper cap off the end of the punch holder body. A support ring can be employed to support the stripping cap for small sized punches, or a metal reinforcement molded into the stripper cap.

A slag chute system for a hot cutting discharge device, including upper and lower removable tubular liner sections aligned below the hot cutting discharge, the internal bores of which are chrome plated and polished to resist adhesion of spatter. A removable annular insert ring surrounds the jet and has a smaller diameter opening than the inside diameter of the upper chute liner section, which in turn is smaller than the internal diameter of the lower chute liner section to produce a stepped diameter chute.

A system is disclosed for registering a sheet in punch press or other apparatus having a control system carrying out a programmed position of the sheet during punching operations, in which a movable locator plate is urged into an advanced position along an axis of movement so as to be displaced when the sheet is moved a fixed distance along one axis. A distance transducer generates a continuously varying electrical signal corresponding to the displacement of the locator plate from its advanced position, which signal is transmitted to the control system to modify the part program in accordance with the actual location of the sheet.

A process and apparatus for protecting a confinement chute from slag build-up caused by accumulation of spatter particles generated by cutting a workpiece by a hot discharge such as a plasma arc or laser, including a high velocity flow of gas such as air directed over the chute internal surface to deflect and cool the spatter particles. The surface is chrome plated to reduce the tendency for adhesion of the particles to the surface.

Process and apparatus for reducing slag build-up on chute surfaces

A multitool punch holder is disclosed in which a tool carrier (22) holds a circumferential array of punches (76) in a corresponding series of bores. Each punch (76) is attached to a stem rod (50) having an upper end protruding above the tool carrier (22). The tool carrier (22) is rotated by an index drive (102, 104, 106, 108) so as to bring a selected one of the stem rods (50) beneath a ram drive features (100) protruding radially outward to lie above the stem rod ends (52). The tool carrier (22) is coupled to the ram (14) by a head member (20) which is telescopically received therein allowing the ram (14) to continue its descent after contact of the tool carrier (22) with the workpiece, the ram (14) having a feature (100) engaging a selected stem rod end (52) lying beneath the ram drive feature (100) to cause advance of the attached punch (76) against the resistance of an encircling stripper spring (62).

A multitool punch holder (12) having a head member (26) coupled to a punch press ram (16) as the press upper turret plate (22) rotates to bring the punch holder (12) into alignment with the ram (16). The punch holder (12) includes a rotary tool carrier (56) carrying a series of punches (80), each able to be selectively rotated into alignment beneath a striker rod (100) slidably mounted in a non rotating body member (30). Stroking of the ram (16) causes an engagement feature (108) to engage the striker rod (100) when the head member (26) telescopes into the body member (30) after axial movement of the holder (12) is arrested by contact with the workpiece (120). The striker rod (100) is then driven to force the coupled individual punch (80) into the workpiece (120). The striker rod (100) is urged to a raised position by an encircling stripper spring (110). A separation spring (42) urges the ram (16) and body member (30) to retracted position with the striker rod (100) out of engagement with the ram engagement feature (108). A detachable striker plate (88) of urethane provides non-marring contact with the workpiece (120).
