A training cartridge projectile for use in either a plastic cartridge case or a conventional metal cartridge case is disclosed that contains no explosive material. The projectile has an insert having a body portion and a front end, a container overmolded onto the body portion of the insert, a frangible ogive fastened to the front end of the tubular insert; and a payload module within the ogive in front of the container carrying a nonexplosive signature material for providing a visual indication of projectile impact to an observer upon projectile impact with an object. The module includes a hollow frangible ampoule containing the signature material, and a generally disc shaped base member engaging the insert and closing the ampoule. The base member preferably has a set of axially extending vanes engaging the signature material during spin-up as the projectile is accelerated through the bore of the weapon firing the projectile.

Non-dud signature training cartridge and projectile

A training cartridge projectile for use in either a plastic cartridge case or a conventional metal cartridge case is disclosed that contains no explosive material. A projectile 10 with a shaped charge warhead 27 and a nose mounted contact fuze 30. A precursor shaped charge 56 and liner 48 are mounted in the base 38 of fuze 30. When a target 64 is impacted by the projectile 10, a precursor shaped charge jet is produced by charge 56 and liner 48 which forms a passage 66 through fuze 30 substantially free of debris from the fuze 30 through which the warhead shaped charge jet 62 passes.

Dual purpose explosive lead for a projectile having a shaped charge

A fuze for firing the explosive charge of a projectile, comprising, in combination, a firing mechanism, including a firing pin, mounted resiliently in said projectile for rearward axial movement of the pin to fire the charge, a probe, including forward and rearward ends and an integral shear washer between the ends, mounted in the projectile with the forward end positioned to receive impact from media traversed by the projectile, with the rearward end slightly spaced forward of the firing mechanism, the washer normally preventing movement of the probe toward the mechanism, so that impact of the fuze with a rigid target shears the washer and enables the probe to engage the mechanism and thereby cause firing of the projectile.
