An antenna beam boundary detector for a sectorized cellular system is disclosed. The difference in signal level received by a main directional antenna and a broad beamwidth antenna is determined by detecting a modulator signal locally impressed on the signal received by the broad beamwidth antenna. The signal level difference factor is the directional antenna beam boundary when the two antennas are correlated. Interferometer effects are cancelled by detecting both amplitude and phase modulation of the locally impressed modulation.

Antenna beam boundary detector for preliminary handoff determination

A method and apparatus for utilizing voice channel transceivers as temporary scanning receivers in a handoff event for a cellular radiotelephone system is disclosed. Voice channel transceiver identifications are stored in link lists according to priority, sectorization, and last use. When a signal strength measurement is required, those cell sectors having available voice channel transceivers are identified and a table providing optimum transceiver selection is utilized to select those voice channel transceivers which will make the signal strength measurement.

Scanning receiver allocation method and apparatus for cellular

An array of antennas for a cellular RF communications system for providing communications to randomly placed transceivers in a given area. The antenna array includes a plurality of antenna sites located in the centers of cells. Each antenna site has a plurality of sectored antennas for providing a plurality of communication channels. A predetermined number of sites are used to constitute a subarray of cells to provide a set of communication channels and channel allocations are repeated from subarray to subarray. Channels are also so allocated as to minimize channel interference and optimize channel utilization. An omnidirectional antenna may be provided for each antenna site for signalling purposes.
