In some embodiments, a method includes performing a directional drilling operation using a drill string having a drilling motor and cutting structures that include a drill bit and a reamer. The method includes receiving data from one or more sensors, wherein at least one of the one or more sensors output data related to at least one performance attribute associated with load monitoring between the drill bit and the reamer. The load monitoring is distributed between the drill bit and the reamer by the drilling motor. The at least one performance attribute comprises a differentiation of distribution of at least one of a weight and a torque applied to each of the drill bit and the reamer. The method includes displaying the data related to the at least one performance attribute associated with the load monitoring in a graphical and numerical representation on a graphical user interface screen.

Monitor and control of directional drilling operations and simulations

A progressing cavity-type drilling motor having an electrical generator disposed within the rotor of the drilling motor. In some embodiments, the electrical generator produces electrical energy from a flow of drilling fluid through a bore in the rotor. In other embodiments, the electrical generator produces electrical energy by harnessing the kinetic energy of the rotor as the drilling motor is used to drill into a formation. The electrical energy generated by the generator can be stored or used to power sensors, actuators, control systems, and other downhole equipment.

An electrical generator positionable downhole in a well bore includes a tubular housing having a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end, the housing having an internal passageway with a plurality of layers. The layers comprise at least a first protective layer, a second protective layer, and an electrically conductive layer positioned between the first and second protective layers. The layers define an internal cavity. A shaft with magnetic inserts is movably positioned in the internal cavity. Electrical current is generated when the shaft is moved. Alternatively, the device may be supplied with electrical power and used as a downhole motor.

A progressing cavity drilling motor positionable in a wellbore includes a tubular housing, a stator having a collection of helical lobes, and a rotor having a collection of helical lobes. The rotor orbits about the central longitudinal axis of the stator. A bearing assembly is coupled to an end of the housing and is disposed around an end of the rotor. The bearing assembly includes a bearing housing disposed concentrically in the stator housing, an outer bearing disposed concentrically in the bearing housing, and an inner bearing disposed on the first cylindrical end of the rotor. The inner bearing has a central axis aligned with the central axis of the rotor and is positioned in the outer bearing such that the inner bearing orbits around the central longitudinal axis of the stator when the rotor is rotated in the stator.

A method includes performing a directional drilling operation. The method also includes receiving data from one or more sensors, wherein at least one of the one or more sensors output data related to a performance attribute of a downhole component that is from a group consisting of a downhole drilling motor and a rotary steerable tool. The downhole component comprises part of a drill string that is used to perform the directional drilling operation. The performance attribute is selected from a group consisting of rotations per unit of time of the downhole component, operating differential pressure across the downhole component and torque output of the downhole component. The method also includes displaying the data in a graphical and numerical representation on a graphical user interface screen.

An example drilling turbine includes a turbine power section having a turbine shaft and a plurality of turbine stages axially arranged along the turbine shaft. A turbine bearing section is coupled to the turbine power section and has a drive shaft operatively coupled to the turbine shaft such that rotation of the turbine shaft rotates the drive shaft. The turbine bearing section includes a lower mandrel that houses a portion of the drive shaft rotatable with respect to the lower mandrel, one or more magnets disposed on an inner surface of the lower mandrel, a generator coil coupled to the drive shaft and aligned with the magnets, and one or more sensors coupled to the drive shaft and in electrical communication with the generator coil. The turbine shaft rotates the drive shaft, which rotates the generator coil with respect to the magnets, and thereby generates electrical power for the sensors.

A downhole drilling tool includes a tubular housing having a first longitudinal end and a second longitudinal end, and a stator disposed in the tubular housing, said stator defining an internal cavity passing there through. The stator includes at least a first protective electrically insulated layer, a second protective electrically insulated layer, and an electrically conductive layer disposed between the first and second protective layers. The electrically conductive layer coupled at a first end to a first electrical device and coupled at a second end to a second electrical device. A rotor is operatively positioned in the internal cavity to cooperate the stator.

A method of constructing a stator/rotor assembly includes extruding at least one preform, and bonding the preform to a stator housing and/or a rotor mandrel. A method of constructing a stator includes applying multiple polymer strips to a bladder; and bonding the polymer strips to a stator housing while compressing the polymer strips between the bladder and the stator housing, without injection molding. A method of constructing a rotor includes applying multiple polymer strips to a rotor mandrel, and bonding the polymer strips to the rotor mandrel while compressing the polymer strips between a bladder and the rotor mandrel, without injection molding.

Stator/rotor assemblies having enhanced performance

A downhole motor assembly for driving a drill bit. The assembly includes a hydraulic drive section with a stator and a rotor located inside the stator to form a flow path between the stator and the rotor. Fluid flowing through the flow path in response to a pressure differential across the hydraulic drive section creates an operative force to rotate the drill bit. The assembly also includes a regulation mechanism that includes a valve and a fluid flow diversion bore for diverting at least some fluid from the flow path when the pressure differential across the hydraulic drive section is greater than or equal to a transition pressure differential.
