The problem of thresholding is considered from a clustering point of view and a novel weight-based clustering method (WCThresh) is implemented in a neural network image processor 50. The neural network image processor 50 uses weights 51-53, representing clusters of gray scale pixels of an image of document 43, to provide a threshold for the image of document 43. The processor 50 modifies weights 51-53 with the input pixels and comparator 60 using a nearest value criterion to provide the threshold.

Global threshold method and apparatus

In a mail sorting system 10, output pixel intensities of an optical scanner 18 have their contrast locally enhanced. A contrast enhancer 24 uses statistical methods (averaging, standard deviation) coupled with empirical stretch and offset data stored in a ROM 25, to enhance pixel contrast in a pipelined processing operation.

Local adaptive contrast enhancement

A digital data memory unit and memory unit array, each unit of which can be searched in accordance with the contents thereof and updated, utilizes a digital storage element in the form of a register, latch, or memory cell, a comparator and control logic. Data is presented to the units in parallel on data lines and compare data is supplied in parallel to the units along other data lines. Parallel search of data in each unit, with multiple updates in units where the stored data matches the compare data, occurs rapidly and in one clock cycle (e.g., approximately 50 nanoseconds). The control logic responds to a match output from the comparator and an update enable pulse to enable a new data word on the data lines to be written into the digital storage element of the unit. The memory unit array is useful in image processing for storing pixel values and searching and updating these values in the process of image analysis to recognize certain images.

A method and apparatus for diagnosing the mechanical condition of a machine. The method of the invention includes the following steps: sensing a reference vibrational signal of the machine; creating a reference set of events from the reference vibrational signal of the machine; saving the reference set of events; sensing a test vibrational signal of the machine; creating a test set of events from the test vibrational signal of the machine; and, comparing the test set of events with the reference set of events to determine the mechanical condition of the machine. The invention further includes a method of extracting a set of events from a vibrational signal of a machine wherein a subset of the events corresponds to a physical action of the machine. The invention also includes a method of determining a set of clustered events for a machine from a plurality of sets of events, wherein each of the sets has a number of events therein. An apparatus is also disclosed for implementing the method of the invention

Method and apparatus for diagnosing the state of a machine

The invention provides a method and apparatus for diagnosing the mechanical condition of a machine. The method of the invention includes the following steps: sensing reference vibrational characteristics of a machine in the time domain; creating a reference signature from the reference vibrational characteristics; saving the reference signature; sensing test vibrational characteristics of the same machine in the time domain; creating a test signature from the test vibrational characteristics; automatically computing a measured distance between at least one point of the reference signature and at least one corresponding point on the test signature; automatically comparing the measured distance against a threshold value to determine if the machine is operating normally or abnormally; and providing a signal when the comparison indicates abnormal operation. An apparatus is also disclosed for implementing the method of the invention.

The method of the present invention consists of the steps of heating an area along the length of a small diameter glass tube while the tube is being rotated, pulling the heated tube using an unidirectional force to rapidly extend the heated area while mechanically maintaining the heat source centrally located along the portion of the tubing being extended. The extended tubing is subsequently cooled and separated at the narrowed portion to produce two capillary tubes.

Method for producing glass tubing of a narrowed diameter

The method of the present invention consists of the steps of heating an area along the length of a small diameter glass tube while the tube is being rotated, pulling the heated tube using an unidirectional force to rapidly extend the heated area while mechanically maintaining the heat source centrally located along the portion of the tubing being extended. The extended tubing is subsequently cooled and separated at the narrowed portion to produce two capillary tubes. The apparatus of the present invention consists of two independently rotatable, co-axially aligned chucks. The chucks rotate in an essentially simultaneous manner, that is, the speed of rotation of each chuck is essentially the same. Each of the chucks has an adjustable collet thereon adapted to receive and hold a section of glass tubing aligned therebetween. A means of moving one of said chucks away from the other is provided. A moveable heating means is positioned intermediate the chucks. The moveable heating means is adapted to start at the same time and to move in the same direction as the movable chuck, but half the distance that the chuck moves. The moveable heating means provides longitudinal symmetry while the rotational means provides axial symmetry.

Apparatus for producing glass tubing of a narrowed diameter

A key telephone system for use with at least two telephone lines that extend between a central office and two or more telephone stations. Each station is capable of responding to a manually-actuated hold select switch by establishing a hold condition on one of the lines and by connecting a line terminating impedance across the line that is to be held. Each station is further capable of monitoring the state of each line, and indicating the state of each line, without applying any indicating signals to the telephone lines. Each station furthermore determines threshold voltages for on-hook, off-hook and hold line states and determines line state by comparison of line voltage with such threshold voltages.
