A method of preventing smoke curling from beneath depending enclosure walls of a grease extraction ventilator, comprises providing a series of apertures in the walls from adjacent the lower edge thereof for a predetermined distance upwardly. The apertures are preferably comparatively small and relatively closely spaced, being preferably placed in parallel rows, also parallel to the lower edge of the wall, with the apertures of adjacent rows. The number of rows may be varied, depending on the height of the wall and the capacity of the ventilator, with additional apertures for a ventilator having a larger capacity. The apertures may be slots, such as relatively short, and with the spacing between parallel rows being equal to or less than the height of the slots, with the lowest row being relatively close to the lower edge of the wall. Or, the apertures may be circular or having other shapes, such as oval, elliptical or the like. A device for preventing smoke rollout consists in apertures in the depending walls of an enclosure into which pass heated products of cooking, positioned as described in connection with the method.

The heat exchanger has a hollow coil through which a liquid is to flow, having a series of adjacent, essentially parallel turns, between which turns members having apertures for the flow of a fluid therethrough, elongated heat conducting paths and in compressed and deformed condition are disposed, for clamping contact with the turns and pressure contact with each other. Examples of such members are woven mesh having strands and expanded metal foil. The members extend across the space encompassed by the turns and thus conduct heat between the turns and a fluid passed through the mesh members in the direction of the axis of the coil, i.e. perpendicular to the planes of the coil turns. The members and coil turns are maintained in compressing contact by a perforated plate at each end of the coil, which plates engage the adjacent members. These plates are held in position by a housing which extends laterally around the members and coil, the housing conveniently being formed of a pair of angular member which may be moved toward each other, to compress the members laterally and the abutting edges then welded, after which the perforated plates may be welded to the angular members.

Heat exchanger

Transfer waste water from wash cycle of dishwasher to collection tank beneath heat exchanger surrounding hollow central space, pass waste water through dual tube heat exchanger in countercurrent relation to cool feed water for hot water heater in central space of heat exchanger, supply heat to water in heater, then hot water to dishwasher rinse. May circulate feed water downwardly through outer space of heater, formed by partition, to lower end of inner space, in which heat is supplied by electrical immersion heaters. Ends of tank of hot water may be semi-oval, semi-elliptical or the like, while partition may be sufficiently close to bottom of tank to produce a wire-drawing effect as inlet water flows from outer to inner space, thereby maintaining light or small particles which fall off electric heaters in circulation, so that such particles will be removed with hot water. Heavier particles will collect in bottom of tank and may be drained periodically.

Method of and unit for recovery of waste energy

A holding tank receives waste water from a dishwasher or laundry machine having a rinse cycle and at least one wash cycle. A pump moves the waste water through a heat exchanger at the same time that the rinse cycle requires hot water from a hot water heater. The cold water feed for the hot water heater is also passed in countercurrent heat exchange relationship with the waste water to provide warmed or heated makeup water at the same time that hot water is being withdrawn therefrom. The cooled waste water from the heat exchanger may be collected in a tank and supplied to any one or more of several additional devices, such as a water cooled refrigerant compressor, a grease extraction ventilator having water contact means, a waste food grinder, etc. The ventilator and compressor may also be placed in series, while the cooling water heated in the compressor is recirculated to the heat exchanger. The holding tank may be mounted directly beneath the dishwasher, or the holding tank and countercurrent heat exchanger may be placed in a common housing, with the holding tank beneath the heat exchanger and a pump to transfer the waste water from the holding tank to the appropriate tubes of the coils of the heat exchanger, from which waste water may be discharged into a discharge area adjacent the holding tank. A removable screen for the waste water may be provided above the holding tank in each instance. When a discharge area is adjacent the holding tank, the screen will be self-cleaning, due to flow of incoming waste water across the screen and into the discharge area, when the screen is occluded.

Method of and apparatus for recovery of waste energy

A method of producing multiple coil, multiple tube heat exchanger from circular tubes, in which alternating turns in each coil have a warmer liquid and other turns a cooler liquid, by coating the outside of each coil with a heat conductive mastic and winding the next coil against the mastic to force the mastic into spaces between adjoining tubes of the first coil, into spaces of adjoining tubes of the second coil and into spaces between opposed tubes of first and second coils. Mastic applied to outside of each coli or into grooves between turns as next coil wound. Double tubes of each coil preferably wound into grooves between turns of preceding coil. Second tube of each coil started across coil from first tube and continued at end of coil past first tube. Succeeding coils wound against mastic in same manner. Turns of first coil attached together, as by soldering, while first and last turns of succeeding coils similarly attached to adjacent turn of coil beneath. Succeeding coils may be terminated between second and third turns of coil beneath, or with appropriate inner diameter of first coil, terminated between last two turns of coil beneath. Several coils may be formed of tubing of the same diameter, with additional coils of tubing of greater diameter, all coils of tubing of same diameter, or all coils of tubing of successively increasing diameter. Length of coils proportioned with respect to diameter of tubing so that liquid will take the same amount of time to flow from one end of each coil to the other.

Method of producing multiple coil, multiple tube heat exchanger

A method of supplying tempered makeup air to a room in conjunction with a grease extraction ventilator disposed above cooking equipment in the room and having removal means for removing grease and smoke particles and the like from air mixed with products of cooking, which includes removing heated air and the remaining products of cooking, after passage through the removal means, through a discharge duct; tempering fresh air in a heat exchanger and discharging the tempered fresh air into the room; passing incoming air to the discharge duct in a manner which automatically regulates the amount of exhaust and makeup air required to remove and replace the minimal amount of outside air to eliminate heat, odors, smoke, gases, grease and dirt as the cooking load changes; and causing incoming air, which is not passed to the discharge duct, to become a portion of the tempered air for discharge into said room. The removal means may be water contact means and there may be heat exchange, at least indirectly, between water from the water contact means with at least a portion of the fresh air. Control of the passage of incoming air to the exhaust duct may be inversely in accordance with the temperature of the heated air and products of cooking, such as measured adjacent the entrance of the exhaust duct and/or the entrance of the grease extraction ventilator. The apparatus corresponds to the method, but may further include an inlet duct for fresh air and a bypass duct between a fresh air plenum chamber and the exhaust duct.

Method of and apparatus for exhaust control and supplying tempered

A series of tubes wound in spiral, spaced relation in pressure contact with the next inner tube or a central cylinder to form, between them, a spiral path for one liquid flowing upwardly in the space between the tubes, while another liquid flows downwardly in the tubes. The outermost tube may be enclosed by a sheath in pressure contact therewith, while several sets of tubes, separated by corresponding sheaths, may be utilized. The diameter of the tubes may be varied for the sets to compensate for the greater length of tubes at an outer position, so that an approximately equal time of travel from one end of the tubes to the opposite ends may be obtained. The spacing between the successive turns of the coils is preferably a distance corresponding to one half the diameter of the tubes.

Coiled heat exchanger

Fresh, outside air may be supplied to a first space, such as a dining area of a restaurant or the like, while air from the first space may be recirculated through an air conditioning unit for cooling or heating the air, which is returned to the first space. Also, air from the first space is transferred to a second space, such as a cooking room of a restaurant or the like, which contains heat producing cooking equipment, the latter resulting in the second space having additional cooling requirements. Such transfer air is passed through a chilling device, in which the air contacts water, as through sprays or a water bath, to cool the water to a temperature close to the dew point of the air, and also to correspondingly cool the air furnished to the second space. When cooling of air to the first space is required, either the recirculated air, but preferably the fresh air, is cooled by the chilled water produced by the chilling device. For heating purposes, water may be heated by the hot gases rising from the cooking equipment through a hood by which such hot gases are removed. Either the chilled water or the heated water may be transferred to a heat transfer unit for cooling or heating, respectively, the fresh air or the recirculated air. When the energy transfer unit is mounted in a position, as on a roof, in which cold outside air, as in the winter, may tend to freeze water in the unit, when the air treatment equipment is shut down, a non-freezing solution, such as aqueous ethylene glycol, may be circulated through the energy transfer unit from a protected heat exchanger through which heated or chilled water from the hood or the chiller, respectively, is circulated. Transfer air from the first space may be sent to a third space, such as other employee spaces of the restaurant or the like, either in addition to the air transferred to the second space, or first to the third space and from there to the second space. Other features are also disclosed.

Method of and apparatus for supplying treated air to spaces having

A gaseous source of waste energy, including heat, is passed through a gas to liquid heat exchanger and then a chiller to agitate a water bath and produce evaporation of water for cooling. The heated transfer liquid is passed through a heat exchanger to heat makeup air or the like, while, alternatively, chilled water from the chiller is passed through the heat exchanger to cool the makeup air. The source of waste energy, including heat, is normally a grease extraction ventilator mounted to receive fumes and heated air from cooking equipment. Any other source of waste energy is normally suitable, such as heated air which has risen to the upper portion of a large room or enclosure, such as an auditorium, theater, meeting hall or the like. The heated air removed from such a position is adapted in part to be recirculated, but all of it may be used to furnish heat for heating fresh makeup air. Several forms of chiller, including specialized double compartment chillers, are disclosed.

Apparatus for utilization of waste energy

A gaseous source of waste energy, including heat, is passed through a gas to liquid heat exchanger and then a chiller to agitate a water bath and produce evaporation of water for cooling. The heated transfer liquid is passed through a heat exchanger to heat makeup air or the like, while, alternatively, chilled water from the chiller is passed through the heat exchanger to cool the makeup air. Supplemental heating, as by a furnace, or supplemental cooling, as by refrigeration, may be utilized when called for. Separate heat exchangers, as for separate areas, are alternatively supplied with heated transfer liquid or chilled water, or one or more supplied with heated transfer liquid and one or more others supplied with chilled water. The source of waste energy, including heat, is normally fumes and heated air from cooking equipment passed through a grease extraction ventilator. Such a grease extraction ventilator may include water contact means, the water of which may be circulated through the heat exchanger when cooling only, by circulating cooled water produced by the chiller, is desired. Other sources of waste energy may be suitable, such as heated air which has risen to the upper portion of a large room or enclosure, such as an auditorium, theater, meeting hall or the like. The heated air removed from such a position is adapted in part to be recirculated, but all of it may be used to furnish heat for heating fresh makeup air. Two forms of a specialized double compartment chiller are disclosed, as well as alternate ways of returning circulated water back to the chiller.

Method for utilization of waste energy

A grease extraction ventilator includes a water bath or water sprays into or through which are directed the products of the gaseous stream rising from cooking equipment and which tends to maintain an ambient temperature. This water is pumped through a heat exchanger for a portion of incoming makeup air directed into the room, the remainder of which is directed toward the intake for smoke and the like, to reduce the amount of air withdrawn from the room by the suction blower. The heat exchanger may also be utilized at a desired location, within or outside of the room in which the ventilator is installed, to heat or cool air or other fluids for heating or other purposes. Air may be directed into the upper portion of the room, such as adjacent the ceiling through a horizontal slot which causes the air to move horizontally to mix with the highest temperature air in the room and flow to portions of the room spaced from the ventilator, thereby avoiding drafts blowing against the cooking personnel. An air chamber adjacent the ventilator has a front wall and a discharge outlet on the underside which directs makeup air toward the ventilator intake. To reduce an undesired flow of air from the lower edge of the front wall, which may produce a flow of smoke and the like into the room, an orifice adjacent the horizontal slot may direct makeup air downwardly along the front wall.

Makeup air tempering for grease extraction ventilator

A series of mesh layers, approximating a loosely woven cloth, are placed between successive adjacent, parallel tubular coils or bends through which a liquid flows. The assembly of coils and mesh layers is compressed to produce a clamping contact between the mesh and each of two opposed coils, as well as compressing the mesh together, both within and outside the areas of the coils. The mesh which intersects an end of the coil is split, so that the mesh may lie on both sides of the coil at that position. A perforated plate may be placed at each end of the mesh and coil assembly, with a screen interposed, in order to maintain the mesh and coils in a clamped condition. The perforated plates may be spot welded to the inside of a housing, the parts of which are also compressed against the mesh and coil assembly. The compression of the mesh against the coils not only provides a greater area of contact of the fibers, strands, wires, etc., of the mesh, but also produces a clamping or pressure contact. In addition, a greater number of wires, strands, etc., of the mesh are in contact with the surface of a coil, or clamped between two coils with other wires, strands, etc., thereby increasing the amount of heat conducted through the mesh and to or from a gas or vapor passing through the mesh.

Method of making heat exchanger

The makeup air device includes a front chamber, a lower wall of which is adapted to force rising smoke and the like into an intake of a grease extraction ventilator. A depending passage at the lower front of the device has an air outlet which discharges air toward the ventilator intake. An adjustment baffle having a forwardly slanted lower flange is moved in the outlet between a position of maximum flow and a position of no flow. Louvers in the front wall of the chamber above the passage are adjustable, so that different amounts of fresh air may flow into the room in which the cooking equipment is placed.

Makeup air device for grease extraction ventilator

The coping is mounted atop the gutter and each is formed of stainless steel, with the top surfaces being sandblasted to prevent slipperiness, particularly when wet. The gutter, which carries water overflowing and draining through slots in the coping, is also used as a form for pouring the concrete walls of the pool. The gutter provides not only check points for transit leveling, but also an upper rear flange for use in leveling the top of the concrete when poured. The rear of the coping is supported by the gutter, while the depending front wall of the coping is supported by an upwardly extending front wall of the gutter, at an outward offset of each, through a series of special, fine adjustment connecting devices. The upstanding front nose of the coping determines the level at which water will overflow, while the various sections of the coping may be adjusted through the fine adjustment devices, to correspond with the water level, thereby providing a highly accurate level setting for the rim. The sections of the gutter are abutted and attached together to provide greater solidity, but the sections of the coping are spaced apart to provide slots through which a small amount of water may flow continuously, so that the gutter will never run dry and require repriming of the pumps. Both the coping and the gutter are reinforced by transverse braces on the underside of the coping and within the gutter, as well as on the underside of the gutter. In addition, a series of hooks are attached to the underside of the gutter, for embedment in the concrete. A drain pipe, at one or more positions and with a surge preventing baffle above its opening, as well as an overflow pipe which extends upwardly to a point at or above the top of the upper transverse brace of the gutter, are connected to piping which leads to the return flow pump and a drain, respectively, before the concrete is poured.

Coping and gutter for rim flow swimming pools

A purifier which includes round and spiral labyrinth passages in heat exchange relationship with similar passages, the incoming passages leading to and the outgoing passages leading from a container for gettering material heated by electrical heaters. The circumferential walls of the round passages are attached together by angular offsets in opposed positions, preferably at about 45.degree.. The spiral passages are formed by a circumferentially spiral plate with an end wall at each end of each passage. The plates may overhang the end walls, so that the plates can be melted back to fuse with the end walls. Also, the heat applied during such melting and fusion heats the end plates sufficiently to be readily bent into a spiral. A second container for gettering material may be located, with or without heating, along the outward path of the heated gases where the temperature will correspond to a lower temperature for further reaction of the gases with a gettering material. In the event that the purifier is used in association with a glove box or the like in which contaminating materials are being handled, the gettering material may be placed in throw-away cartridges formed by spot welding or tack welding a perforated plate or screen to the ends of a tube or between the periphery of two spaced, parallel, circular plates.
