A clamp including an inverted spring portion and a plurality of tabs about a circumference of an inner portion of the clamp. The inverted spring portion of the clamp is insertable into a groove of a clamping interface between a flange and an outer portion thereof to align the plurality of tabs proximate to the flange. As described, the clamp provides a low profile interface for clamping discs to a spindle assembly which snap fits into the groove to provide a screwless clamp interface. Other features and benefits that characterize embodiments of the present invention will be apparent upon reading the following detailed description and review of the associated drawings.

Clamp or clamp assembly having a low profile

An apparatus and associated method for clamping an article to a rotatable motor hub. A clamp has a web portion and a plurality of protuberant members extending away from the web portion. Distal ends of the protuberant members are radially disposable within a concentric ring to a clamp axis of rotation, the ring being sized for an interference fit with an outer diameter of the motor hub. The clamp is placed upon the motor so that the protuberant members contactingly engage the motor hub. Advancing a fastener moves the clamp axially to compressingly engage against the article, and resultingly moves the clamp radially to clearingly disengage the protuberant members from the motor hub.

Self-centering clamp

A base plate for a spindle motor is provided defining a minimal axial gap with a relatively rotatable magnet. In an example, a surface of the base plate is positioned at 0.1 mm from an adjacent surface of a relatively rotatable magnet. The base plate is comprised of a composite material such that stiffness is improved and acoustic vibration is reduced, while maintaining low power consumption and a fast start-up time. A first material, being a nonmagnetic material is employed adjacent to a motor magnet, and a second material having a preferred stiffness is employed at a greater radial distance from the magnet than the radial distance between a stator and the magnet.

Base plate for spindle motor

Stator and base plate interface alignment is provided for a spindle motor, meeting design specifications such that motor performance is maintained. A portion of a surface of the stator is separated from the base plate. Accurate stator z-height, parallelism and concentricity are provided for use with a low profile disc drive memory system. In an aspect, laminations are formed about a stator and the bottom layer laminations are formed with a smaller diameter than the top layer lamination. The stator bottom layer laminations seat on a flat base plate machined surface, avoiding a base plate corner radius. Precise machining of a small corner interface of the base plate where a stator is typically seated and aligned with the base plate is made unnecessary. Component machining costs, wear and tear to machining systems, and machining process cycle times are reduced.

Geometrically aligning a stator and a base plate for a spindle motor

A method for forming a disc stack assembly suitable for use in a disc drive. A number of discs are loaded onto a spindle motor hub and a disc clamp assembly is installed to secure the discs to the hub. The disc clamp assembly includes an annular retaining ring and a substantially planar, disc shaped clamp plate. The annular retaining ring is secured within an annular ring recess of the spindle motor hub and deforms the clamp plate so that the clamp plate applies an axially directed clamping force to the discs. The disc clamp includes an annular hat flange. The disc stack assembly is preferably balanced by selectively removing material from the hat flange or by attaching a balance weight to the hat flange.

Method for forming a disc stack assembly

A disc stack assembly for use in a disc drive. A spindle motor hub includes an annular ring recess. A disc is clamped to the spindle motor hub by a disc clamp assembly comprising a clamp plate and a retaining ring. The clamp plate includes an inner ring engagement portion, an outer disc engagement portion, and an initial, substantially planar shape in an undeformed state. The retaining ring is secured within the annular ring recess and maintains the clamp plate in a conically deformed state so that the inner ring engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a first moment force against the retaining ring while the outer disc engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a second moment force as an axially directed clamping force upon the disc.

Disc stack assembly having a clamp plate and a retaining ring to clamp a disc to a spindle motor hub

A voice coil for a head positional assembly of a disc drive. The voice coil including a dampener which dampens vibrations occurring in the voice coil. The dampener includes a constraint material and a viscoelastic material.
