A method of substituting an azide for hydrogen bonded to a tertiary carbon atom is provided. A liquid mixture in an oxygen-free environment has spaced-apart carbon and platinum electrodes disposed therein. The liquid mixture includes a solvent, ammonium azide, and a base material having at least one tertiary carbon atom with hydrogen bonded thereto. An electric current is applied to the electrodes where the liquid mixture undergoes a reaction. The electrochemically-induced reaction yields a liquid product and a solid product. The liquid product includes the solvent and a constituent having at least one tertiary carbon atom with an azide bonded thereto.

Method of electrochemical substitution of azides for hydrogen on tertiary carbons

An explosive composition, an insensitive munition with a metal eutectic binder, and a method include using a metal eutectic binder with metal coated explosive particles. The metal eutectic binder concept represents novel melt-cast solid mixtures having explosives such as RDX (cyclonite) or HMX (octogen) distributed in an alloy including, for example, eutectic bismuth (Bi)/tin (Sn). Eutectic alloys are particularly considered to provide a melting point of the mixture below the exothermic point of the explosive so that vented munitions disarm by melting without exploding in the event of fire or other elevated heating. Particularly novel is the pre-coating of crystals of explosive (RDX/HMX) with a metal to promote wetting and bonding during melt fabrication of the final mixture. Copper, aluminum, and other metals are considered for use as coating.

Metal binders for insensitive munitions

An encapsulated, particulate energetic composition includes one of explosive particles of a known size, oxidizer particles of a known size, and a mixture of explosive particles and oxidizer particles of known sizes, in which particles of one of the explosive particles, the oxidizer particles, and the mixture of the explosive and the oxidizer particles, are encapsulated by a combustible fuel of a known thickness to enhance the energy output. A method of making the encapsulated, particulate energetic composition includes placing one of explosive particles, oxidizer particles, and a mixture of explosive particles and oxidizer particles within a deposition chamber, mixing one of the explosive particles, the oxidizer particles, and the mixture of explosive particles and the oxidizer particles, and depositing, to a known encapsulating thickness, a combustible fuel onto the one of the explosive particles, the oxidizer particles, and the mixture of explosive particles and oxidizer.

Encapsulated, particulate energetic composition and the making of same

A composite electrode includes a sheet of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and an electrically conductive metal. The sheet of CNTs include a surface region where carbon atoms are available. The metal is chemically bonded to at least a portion of the carbon atoms whereby a metal carbide is defined.

The nitroaromatic explosive detector comprises a microelectrode array formed on a semiconductor substrate, a polyamine or polyamine-functionalized coating deposited on and contiguous with the microelectrode array and the semiconductor substrate, and a measuring device for measuring any of resistance, conductance, and capacitance across the microelectrode array.

Method and device for detection of a nitroaromatic explosive

The invention generally relates to an energetic composition including adjacent layers of an explosive and a combustible fuel, and making of the energetic composition. Specifically, making the energetic composition includes vapor deposition of an explosive layer on a combustible fuel surface; alternatively, a combustible fuel layer may be chemically or physically deposited on an explosive surface to make the energetic composition.
