A charge port for an electric vehicle includes a first charging terminal, a second charging terminal spaced from the first charging terminal, and a phase change material (PCM) cartridge including a non-porous housing storing an amount of PCM. The non-porous housing is arranged in thermal contact with one of the first charging terminal and the second charging terminal.

A battery pack includes an elongated exhaust conduit defining a gas flow channel. The exhaust conduit includes a longitudinal center axis and a terminal end having a pack vent. The battery pack also includes fins disposed within the gas flow channel, and a plurality of battery cells arranged adjacent to the exhaust conduit. Each respective battery cell includes an outer casing defining a cell cavity. The casing defines a cell vent opening. An anode and a cathode are disposed within the cell cavity, and a vent cap covers the cell vent opening. The vent cap opens at a predetermined pressure to release hot gasses from the cell cavity into the gas flow channel. The fins direct the hot gasses along the longitudinal center axis and toward the terminal end of the exhaust conduit, and thus to the pack vent for discharge to the surrounding ambient environment.

An electric vehicle charging port includes a pair of charging pins each connected to a respective charging cable by a base. A pair of porous metallic cages surround the base of the pair of charging pins. A phase change material disposed in the pair of porous metallic cages and a vapor chamber is disposed between the base of the pair of charging pins and the pair of porous cage. The phase change material with an optional vapor chamber and high thermal conductivity (metal or graphite) foam or mesh to provide faster response of transient heat generation.

An electrified drivetrain for a vehicle includes a first electric machine, a second electric machine, a clutch, an HVAC compressor, and a controller. The second electric machine is rotatably coupled to a geartrain, the first electric machine is rotatably coupled to the HVAC compressor, and is rotatably couplable to the geartrain via the clutch, and the clutch is operative in a first state and a second state. The first electric machine is rotatably coupled to the geartrain when the clutch is controlled to the first state, and is decoupled from the geartrain when the clutch is controlled to the second state. The controller is operatively connected to the first and second electric machines, the clutch, and the HVAC compressor to control operation of the electrified drivetrain. The first electric machine can be used as a heater element and to provide mechanical power to the drivetrain.

A piston for a diesel engine includes a piston body having a skirt and crown. The piston body has portions defining an outer combustion bowl and an inner combustion bowl within the piston body through the crown. The outer combustion bowl has a curved annular side wall extending from the crown surface and an annular flat shelf extending from the curved annular side wall. The new stepped bowl design integrates a bottom profile with smoothly varying curvature and a sharp step at the top. The annular flat shelf is recessed a distance in the range of 2.5-4.5 millimeters from a line coplanar with the crown surface. The piston body defines an outer convex curved surface connecting the curved annular side wall to the crown surface. The outer convex curved surface has a radius of curvature in the range of 0.25-0.75 millimeter.

Disclosed are multi-pulse fuel injection systems, control logic for operating such systems, and direct-injection engines having multi-pulse fuel delivery capabilities. A method is disclosed for operating the fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine (ICE) assembly. The method includes a vehicle controller transmitting command signals to the fuel injectors to inject a first pilot quantity of fuel (Q) and, subsequently, inject a second pilot quantity of fuel (Q), distinct from Q, after a first dwell time between Qand Qduring a single combustion cycle of the ICE assembly. The vehicle controller also transmits command signals to the fuel injectors to inject a third pilot quantity of fuel (Q), greater than Qand Q, after a second dwell time between Qand Q, and then inject a fourth pilot quantity of fuel (Q), less than Q, after a third dwell time between Qand Qduring the combustion cycle.
