Process for producing homopolymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes by contacting monomeric material including at least one conjugated diene with a catalyst system comprising (A) a first transition metal compound selected from Cr, Mo and W compounds, and a second transition metal compound selected from Fe, Co and Ni compounds, (B) a catalyst modifier and, optionally, (C) one or more catalyst activators.

Diene polymerisation

A process is disclosed for the preparation of zinc alkyl chain growth products via a catalyzed chain growth reaction of an alpha-olefin on a zinc alkyl, wherein the chain growth catalyst system employs a group 3-10 transition metal, or a group 3 main group metal, or a lanthanide or actinide complex, and optionally a suitable activator. The products can be further converted into alpha-olefins by olefin displacement of the grown alkyls as alpha-olefins from the zinc alkyl chain growth product, or into primary alcohols, by oxidation of the resulting zinc alkyl chain growth product to form alkoxide compounds, followed by hydrolysis of the alkoxides.

Chain growth reaction process

Process for producing homopolymers or copolymers of conjugated dienes by contacting monomeric material having at least one conjugated diene with a catalyst system including two or more different transition metal compounds and optionally one or more activators. Preferred transition metal compounds are based on cobalt and chromium, especially complexes thereof having benzimidazole ligands.

A polymerization catalyst composition comprising (1) a transition metal compound of Formula (A), Z being 5-membered heterocyclic containing at least one carbon, at least one nitrogen and at least one of nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the others being nitrogen or carbon; M is a Group 3 to 11 metal or a lanthamide metal; Eand Eare divalent groups of aliphatic, alicyclic, aromatic or alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, or heterocyclic; Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are zero or integer such that X and L satisfy valency/oxidation state of M, (2) a catalyst-activating support which is a solid particulate substance, insoluble in hydrocarbons, comprising at least magnesium and aluminum atoms and hydrocarbyloxy groups containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, the molar ration of Mg/Al being in the range 1.0 to 300 and the molar ratio of hydrocarbyloxy groups to aluminum atoms being in the range 0.5 to 2.0, and optionally, (3) an additional activator selected from aluminum alkyl and boron compounds. 

Polymerisation and oligomerisation catalysts

Process for making a copolymer by copolymerising (1) ethylene with (2) at least one comonomer selected from aliphatic C-Calpha-olefins and (3) 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene, including contacting the monomer with a catalyst comprising a transition metal compound having the following Formula A, and an activating quantity of a suitable activator of the formula shown herein, wherein Z comprises a five-membered heterocyclic group, the five membered heterocyclic group containing at least one carbon atom, at least one nitrogen atom and at least one other hetero atom selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the remaining atoms in the ring being selected from nitrogen and carbon; M is a metal from Group 3 to 11 of the Periodic Table or a lanthanide metal; Eand Eare divalent groups independently selected from (i) aliphatic, hydrocarbon, (ii) alicyclic hydrocarbon, (iii) aromatic hydrocarbon, (iv) alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, (v) heterocyclic groups and (vi) heterosubstituted derivatives of said groups (i) to (v); Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are independently zero or integers such that the number of X and L groups satisfy the valency and oxidation state of the metal M.

Polyolefins

A process is disclosed for the preparation of zinc alkyl chain growth products via a catalysed chain growth reaction of an alpha-olefin on a zinc alkyl, wherein the chain growth catalyst system employs a group 3-10 transition metal, or a group 3 main group metal, or a lanthanide or actinide complex, and optionally a suitable activator. Polymerisation catalysts

A polymerisation catalyst comprising (1) a transition metal compound of Formula (A), and optionally (2) an activator, wherein Z is 5-membered heterocyclic containing carbon, nitrogen and at least one other selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the remaining atoms in the ring being nitrogen and carbon; M is a metal from Group 3 to 11 or a lanthanide metal; Eand Eare divalent hydrocarbon, heterocyclic or heterosubstituted derivatives of these; Dand Dare donor atoms or groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are zero or integers so that X and L satisfy the valency/oxidation state of M, characterized in that the complex contains at least one polymerisable olefinic double bond which is present in, or substituent to, at least one of the atoms, groups or ligands represented by Z, E, D and L. The catalyst binds to the forming polymer providing product with good particle morphology.

A transition metal complex having the following Formula (A): wherein the monovalent groups Rand Rare &#x2014;R, &#x2014;OR, &#x2014;NRR, and &#x2014;NHR: the monovalent groups R, R, R, Rand R, and the divalent group Rare (i) aliphatic hydrocarbon, (ii) alicyclic hydrocarbon, (iii) aromatic hydrocarbon, (iv) alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (v) heterocyclic groups and (vi) heterosubstituted derivatives of said groups (i) to (v); M is a Group (3) to (11) or lanthanide metal; E is phosphorus or arsenic; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n is (1) or (2), y and z are independently zero or integers, such that the number of X and L groups satisfy the valency and oxidation state of the metal M. n is preferably (2) and the two resulting Rgroups are preferably linked. The complex can be used with optional activator to polymerise olefins

Z is a five-membered heterocyclic group containing at least one carbon atom, at least one nitrogen atom and at least one other hetero atom selected from nitrogen, sulphur and oxygen, the remaining atoms in the ring being nitrogen or carbon; M is a metal from Group 3 to 11 of the Periodic Table or a lanthanide metal; Eand Eare divalent groups from (i) aliphatic hydrocarbon, (ii) alicyclic hydrocarbon, (iii) aromatic hydrocarbon, (iv) alkyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon (v) heterocyclic groups and (vi) heterosubstituted derivatives of groups (i) to (v); Dand Dare donor groups; X is an anionic group, L is a neutral donor group; n=m=zero or 1; y and z are zero or integers. The catalysts are useful for polymerising or oligomerising 1-olefins.

Polymerization catalysts

The present invention relates to a complex having the formula (I) wherein M is selected from Sn(II), Sn(IV), Al(III) and Mg(II); each of Rand Ris independently hydrocarbyl; Ris H or hydrocarbyl; and X is a linker group. A further aspect of the invention relates to the use of said complex as a polymerisation initiator, particularly in the polymerisation of lactides.

Diamido alkoxides as polymerisation initiators

An enolate functionalized reaction intermediate of general formula (I), wherein X is an alkyl group; Z is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy, thiol, aryloxy or ester; n is an integer and is at least one; Y is alkyl or H; the tetradentate ligand around the Al is optionally substituted. Also claimed is a process for the preparation of the enolate functionalized reaction intermediate and its reaction with a vinylic monomer and a Lewis acid to produce the corresponding vinylic polymer.
