The invention relates to a piston system () for use in a homogenizer, comprising a piston () that is configured and arranged to make a reciprocating movement in use of the piston system, a cylinder () that is configured and arranged to receive and guide at least a first part of the piston, a first supply channel () that is configured and arranged to supply a lubricating medium () to a portion () of the first part of the piston that in use is arranged inside the cylinder, and a second supply channel () that is configured and arranged to, in use, supply a cooling medium () to a second part of the piston outside the cylinder. Also disclosed is a process for the production of an elastomer agglomerate composition forcing a slurry comprising elastomeric particles through an aperture to obtain the elastomer agglomerate composition using the piston system.

Disclosed herein is a core-shell graft copolymer produced by coagulation of an aqueous latex comprising a quantity of particles of the copolymer and a quantity of a fatty acid surfactant, wherein the coagulation involves the addition of a quantity of a multivalent metal salt, preferably a bivalent or trivalent metal salt. Such copolymer provides in an improvement of the surface properties of moulded articles produced from such copolymers, as demonstrated by a reduction of the content of gels in the surface layer.

The present disclosure relates to a polymerization process wherein the emulsifier is introduced in an initial batch as well as during a continuous feed to provide improved mechanical stability of the generated latex. Improved soap coverage can also be achieved during the polymerization process.

Process to produce fluoropolymer-based latex with mechanical stability

An emulsion polymerization process for the preparation of polybutadiene grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile monomers in a reaction system is provided. The resultant product has a low end content of unreacted residual monomers, low yellowness index, and improved impact strength. The diene rubber is prepared via a process wherein a chain transfer agent is added on a continuous basis to give a rubber substrate having a low crosslink density. In one embodiment of the invention, the process includes charging the reaction system with a pre-selected diene emulsion with a low crosslink density, adding a first portion of at least one of a styrene monomer and acrylonitrile monomer to the diene emulsion, adding to the reaction system, over a predetermined time, an initiator and a second portion of acrylonitrile and styrene monomer, and polymerizing the catalyzed reaction mixture of diene substrate, styrene and acrylonitrile to form ABS graft polymers. In another embodiment, a third monomer is added after the conversion rate of the monomers is greater than 98%.

Enhanced polymerization process

A semi-batch process is provided for making a diene rubber latex. The process involves (a) providing an amount of an initial liquid batch composition (containing water, emulsifier and diene monomer), sufficient to occupy from 50 to 80 volume percent of a pressure reaction vessel based on the total volume of the vessel, (b) feeding to the vessel a liquid feed composition containing diene monomer and initiator, (c) providing cooling to the vessel to cool the liquid and vapor therein, and (d) reacting the diene monomer to a final diene monomer conversion level of at least 80 mol percent based on the total moles of diene monomer used in the reaction, and the final liquid volume level in the vessel being at least 80 volume percent based on the total volume of the vessel. The process allows for a high initial reaction rate which peaks early in the process when efficient vapor phase cooling is maximized, and maintains a low latex viscosity throughout the process thereby providing efficient liquid phase cooling during latex in the process. The present process allows for higher levels of production over batch utilizing the same vessel volume. A rubber latex is also provided having a narrow particle size distribution, and a vinyl aromatic-diene rubber graft copolymer is provided exhibiting certain advantageous properties.
