A thermostat subbase has a conductive grid located on a first surface of an insulating base. Terminals for connection to the controlled heating and cooling apparatus and terminals for connection to a thermostat are integrally formed from the conductive grid. Manual switching is provided to connect adjoining grid portions. The adjoining grid portions extend over a pocket formed in the base and are shaped to receive a conductive ball.

A thermostat having heat anticipation uses a temperature responsive bimetallic element for effecting a thermostat contact closure during a heating operation controlled by the thermostat with an electrical contact carried by terminal strip positioned adjacent to the bimetallic element and formed from a high resistance stainless steel material. The resistance of the terminal strip is enhanced by lengthening the current path into a convoluted path utilizing notched out areas of the terminal strip. The resistance heat generated in the terminal strip by the current flow therein during the heating operation provides the desired heat anticipation for the operation of the thermostat by the bimetallic element by increasing the temperature sensed by the element.

A thermostat adapted for controlling heating and cooling apparatuses has a temperature control point adjustment means connected to a changeover switch means whereby upon the adjustment of the temperature control point adjustment means in a first range to select a cooling control point, the changeover switch means only connects the thermostat to the cooling apparatus and when the temperature control point adjustment means is in the heating range, the changeover switch means only connects the thermostat to the heating apparatus. The limited range of temperature selection in the first and second range is an energy conservation feature of the thermostat.
