A method and apparatus for tracing operations in multiple computer systems. An embodiment of a method includes running a computer application, where the computer application operates on multiple computer systems, including a first system and a second system. The first system and the second system have different computer environments. A trace of the computer application is performed, with performance of the trace including enabling a first trace of the first system and enabling a second trace of the second system. Trace data is collected from the first system and the second system during the operation of the application, and the trace data from the first system and the trace data from the second system are combined.

Tracing operations in multiple computer systems

A method for generating a common trace data format is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes generating trace data at a provider, identifying a format of the trace data, comparing the format of the trace data with a common format to determine if the format is in compliance with the common format, and modifying the format to comply with the common format, if the format is not in compliance with the common format.

A method and apparatus for enabling tracing operations in clusters of servers. An embodiment of a method includes receiving a first message at a first managed bean on a first server node of a cluster of servers, and enabling a performance trace of a computer application on the first server node in response to the first message, where the computer application is running on a plurality of server nodes of the cluster of servers, including the first server node and a second server node. The method further provides for sending a second message from the first managed bean on the first server node to a second managed bean on the second server node, and enabling the performance trace of the computer application on the second server node in response to receipt of the second message.

A method for providing a mechanism for generating a common format for trace data is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes generating trace data at a plurality of providers, the trace data including a first trace data having a first format and a second trace data having a second format, receiving the trace data at a database via a common interface, storing the trace data at the database in compliance with a common format, and providing access to the trace data stored at the database via a user interface.
