A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a first feature, a second feature, and a bilayer adhesion structure. The first feature includes a first primary metal. The second feature includes an oxide region, and a mixed metal oxide adhesion layer that is adhered to the oxide region and provided on a surface of the second feature. The bilayer adhesion structure includes the mixed metal oxide adhesion layer of the second feature, and a metal adhesion layer. The metal adhesion layer is disposed between and adhered to the first feature and the mixed metal oxide adhesion layer of the second feature. The metal adhesion layer includes a second primary metal that is different than the first primary metal.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording head with a bilayer adhesion structure

A hard disk drive (HDD) includes a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head. The HAMR head includes one or more features comprising a nanoparticle-reinforced plasmonic matrix. The nanoparticle-reinforced plasmonic matrix comprises a plasmonic metal and a plurality of nanoparticles dispersed in the plasmonic metal. The nanoparticles comprise a transparent conductive oxide.

A method of forming a magnetic element. The method includes cooling a substrate to a cryogenic temperature. The method further includes depositing a magnetic layer with a grain refining dopant on the substrate. The magnetic layer with the grain refining dopant deposited on the substrate cooled to the cryogenic temperature has a magnetic moment that is greater than 2 Tesla and very soft magnetic properties.

A method of controlling a shape and size of at least one solder joint of a magnetic recording head that includes a trailing surface and a plurality of bond pads, wherein each bond pad comprises a base layer comprising a top surface and a top edge, the method including the steps of forming at least one solder dam by covering a portion of the top surface of the base layer of at least one of the bond pads with a coating layer that comprises a nonwettable, electrically conductive material positioned adjacent to the top edge of at least one of the bond pads, thereby defining a coated portion and an uncoated portion of the base layer, and applying solder material to the uncoated portion of the base layer adjacent to the solder dam so that the coating layer constrains movement of the solder material beyond the uncoated portion.

Methods of controlling a shape and size of solder joints of magnetic recording heads

A magnetic recording head is provided including a body with a trailing surface, a plurality of bond pads in a row, each of which is spaced by a gap from an adjacent bond pad along a width of the trailing surface. Each bond pad includes a base layer having a top surface, a coating layer covering at least a portion of the top surface of the base layer, two side edges spaced from each other across a width of the bond pad, wherein a width of the gap between adjacent bond pads is defined by one side edge of each of two adjacent bond pads, a top edge extending between the two side edges, and at least one solder dam comprising a nonwettable, electrically conductive material positioned adjacent to the top edge of at least one of the bond pads.

A method of forming a magnetic recording head. The method includes depositing a sacrificial metal alloy layer, which is wet etchable and has a moderate mill resistance, over a substrate. The method also includes depositing a write pole layer over the sacrificial metal alloy layer. The write pole layer has a bottom surface and a top surface opposite the bottom surface. A portion of the bottom surface of the write pole layer is in contact with the sacrificial metal alloy layer.

A write head having a main pole, a gap layer, and at least two sacrificial layers. In accordance with one embodiment, a method includes depositing a non-magnetic gap layer of material above a main pole layer of magnetic material; depositing a sacrificial layer of material above the non-magnetic gap layer of material; etching a portion of the sacrificial layer of material while not entirely removing the sacrificial layer of material; and depositing additional sacrificial material to the etched sacrificial layer.

The second gap layer of non-magnetic material can be directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material. In accordance with one embodiment, this allows the gap to serve as a non-magnetic seed for the second layer of magnetic material. A method of manufacturing such a device is also described.

An apparatus comprises a head transducer and a resistive temperature sensor provided on the head transducer. The resistive temperature sensor comprises a first layer comprising a conductive material and having a temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and a second layer comprising at least one of a specular layer and a seed layer. A method is disclosed to fabricate such sensor with a laminated thin film structure to achieve a large TCR. The thicknesses of various layers in the laminated thin film are in the range of few to a few tens of nanometers. The combinations of the deliberately optimized multilayer thin film structures and the fabrication of such films at the elevated temperatures are disclosed to obtain the large TCR.

A write pole may be formed by first depositing a dielectric layer onto a substrate and then patterning the dielectric layer to form a trench with a write pole shape. The trench is subsequently filled with the evaporation deposition of a magnetic material to form a write pole. The trench may have a greater depth dimension than width dimension.

A data writer can be configured with at least a write pole separated from a front shield by a non-magnetic gap layer. The front shield may consist of at least a seed layer and a shielding layer with the shielding layer having an easy axis coercivity along a first direction of 4 Oe or more and a hard axis coercivity along a second direction of 0.5 Oe or more.

An apparatus and associated method provides a magnetic writing element that may have at least a write pole tuned to a predetermined first grain size with a cryogenic substrate temperature. A magnetic shield can be formed with a predetermined second grain size that is tuned with the cryogenic substrate temperature.

An apparatus disclosed herein comprises a reader structure having a sensor stack and a bottom shield having a first end and a second end on opposite sides of the bottom shield in a cross-track direction, wherein the first end is formed by intersection of arcs. In one implementation, the apparatus disclosed herein the sensor has a bottom shield having a bullet shape with a first end along a cross-track direction being rectangular and a second end along the cross-track direction being formed by an intersection of arcs.
