The present invention is directed towards curable film-forming coating compositions comprising metal particles; an alkaline earth metal compound comprising an alkaline earth metal oxide, an alkaline earth metal carbonate, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal sulfate, an alkaline earth metal monocarboxylate, an alkaline earth metal phosphate, or combinations thereof; and an organic film-forming binder. Also disclosed are methods of making curable film-forming coating compositions, methods of coating substrates, and coated substrates resulting therefrom.

The present invention relates to a battery comprising a crosslinked intumescent layer selected from a coating and a self-supported film or sheet the layer being formed from a curable intumescent composition comprising: (a) a resin component comprising one or more oligomeric or polymeric compounds having a plurality of functional groups; (b) optionally a curing agent having a plurality of functional groups that are reactive with the functional groups of the oligomeric or polymeric compound of resin component (a); and (c) a compound providing an expansion gas upon thermal decomposition; wherein compounds (a) to (c) differ from each other, to an article comprising a battery, wherein the crosslinked intumescent layer is applied to a part of the article adjacent to the battery between the battery and the article, to methods to provide fire protection to a battery or an article comprising a battery or to reduce or prevent thermal runaway of a battery.

A method for coating a material having a plurality of fibers includes treating at least a portion of the fibers by applying a liquid solution over at least a portion of the fibers of the material in which the liquid solution includes a polymer dispersed in a liquid medium, drying at least a portion of the liquid solution applied over the fibers of the material to obtain a dried polymeric material that forms a network of discontinuous dried polymeric particles over the fibers, applying to at least a portion of the fibers a first coating composition comprising a film-forming resin that interacts with the dried polymeric material, and drying the first coating composition to form a first coating layer over at least a portion of the fibers. Aqueous intumescent coating compositions which include a non-ionic surfactant having a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of 9 to 20, and substrates coated with the coating composition are disclosed. Inclusion of the non-ionic surfactant in the coating compositions is found to reduce char cracking and improve the mechanical strength, cell size, and cell density for intumescent chars formed when coatings deposited from the coating compositions are exposed to open flame and/or elevated temperatures, as compared to the same coatings lacking the non-ionic surfactants.
