A power management scheme for USB systems. For Mobile systems that has re-timer, a handshake is used between power delivery (PD) controller, re-timer and embedded controller (EC) so that the PD controller can end higher wattage power contract on USB-C connector after TBT/USB4 link is in low power (CLd/U3) and during system low power transition allowing Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework (DPTF) framework to boost CPU performance and enhance battery capacity respectively. The same solution can be extended to desktop segment to allow PD controller to lower the USB-C power contract with connected devices before switching to standby rail. For mobile systems that are without re-timer, a handshake is used between BIOS, PD controller and EC so that PD controller can end higher wattage power contract on USB-C connector after TBT/USB4 link is in low power (CLd/U3) and during system low power transition.

Embodiments are directed toward apparatuses, systems, and methods to implement policies for dynamically switching between an integrated graphics mode and a discrete graphics mode for providing a display signal to an external USB Type-C port. Some embodiments include a controller configured to provide signals to a first multiplexer and to a second multiplexer, and based on a platform policy, control the at least first or the second multiplexer to dynamically switch to the first graphics mode to output signals received from an integrated graphics controller to the external USB Type-C port or to switch to the second graphics mode to output signals received from a discrete graphics controller to the external USB Type-C port. Apparatus and methods for managing power consumption of a data-path in a computer system are provided, the data-path comprising a first port and a second port, the first port comprising a high-speed and the second port comprising a low-speed port. The disclosed method including connecting a device to the data-path, determining that the connected device is to communicate using the second port and turning off an active circuit associated with the first port of the data-path.

Aspects of the embodiments are directed to a ThunderBolt (TBT) input/output (I/O) controller apparatus. The TBT I/O controller apparatus can include an output port to receive a connection to a display device; a multiplexer coupled to the output port; a first input port coupled to the multiplexer; a second input port coupled to the multiplexer; a memory element to store graphics preference data; and TBT firmware (FW). The TBT FW can detect a connected device at the input port; determine a graphics processor for the connected device based on the graphics preference data; and logically connect the connected device to one of the first input port or the second input port through the multiplexer based on the determined graphics processor.

Flexible multiport USB type-C power management

Embodiments may include systems and methods for managing multiple ports of a computing interface. A computing device may include a connector with a power port and a data port. A connector manager may identify whether a port partner is coupled to the connector, identify an inquiry related to a status of the connector, where the inquiry may be received from a BIOS of the computing device. In addition, the connector manager may generate an indication of the status of the connector, and further transmit the indication of the status of the connector to the BIOS. A BIOS may identify that a data device coupled to the connector through a port partner is to be initialized, and further transmit to a connector manager an inquiry related to a status of the connector, before initializing the data device.
