This disclosure describes techniques are described for proactively computing configuration information for policy-driven on-demand tunnel creation and deletion between sites in a software-defined networking in wide area network (SD-WAN) environment. In some examples, a controller device is configured to precompute configuration data for an overlay tunnel through the wide area network to connect a first site and a second site of a plurality of sites in the SD-WAN environment. The controller device is further configured to obtain, after precomputing the configuration data, an indication to configure the overlay tunnel. The controller device is also configured to send, in response to receiving the indication to configure the overlay tunnel, at least some of the configuration data to the first site to configure the first site with the overlay tunnel.

Proactive tunnel configuration computation for on-demand SD-WAN tunnels

A computing device may determine an occurrence of a network event associated with a pair of network devices of a plurality of network devices included in a network. The computing device may, in response to determining the occurrence of the network event, determine a plurality of network parameters associated with the network. The computing device may determine, using a plurality of decision trees and based on the plurality of network parameters, a number of overlay tunnels to add between the pair of network devices. The computing device may create the number of overlay tunnels over an underlay topology of the network between the pair of network devices.

A software-defined networking (SDN) controller that facilitates cloud-based services of a service provider network that sets up the SD-WAN is configured to determine whether a tunnel between end-points is to be created or deleted based on information indicative of the traffic, such as amount, time, application generating the traffic, and the like, between end-points.

For example, a controller that performs aspects of NFV management and orchestration (MANO) receives requirements for a network service to be provisioned in the NFVI. Based on the requirements for the network service, which may specify one or VNFs and may specify individual requirements for each VNF, the controller selects a type of switch and corresponding input/output method for each VNF.
