A battery module includes: a positive terminal disposed on an exterior of a housing of the battery module; a negative terminal disposed on the exterior of the housing of the battery module; groups of two or more cylindrical battery cells electrically connected in parallel; and electrically conductive bus bars that electrically connect the groups in series, that electrically connect positive terminals of the cylindrical battery cells of a first one of the groups with the positive terminal of the battery module, and that electrically connect negative terminals of the cylindrical battery cells of a second one of the groups with the negative terminal of the battery module.

Cylindrical cell-based parametric battery module for flexible assembly and packaging

A system in an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft includes two or more subsystems. Each subsystem includes an energy storage systems (ESS). Each ESS is coupled to one or more motors that actuate one or more rotors of the eVTOL aircraft and includes one or more energy sub-packs and one or more power sub-packs. The one or more power sub-packs supply more power than the one or more energy sub-packs and the one or more energy sub-packs supply consistent power for a longer duration than the one or more power sub-packs. The system also includes one or more inter-subsystem switches to electrically isolate or connect adjacent ones of the two or more subsystems.

Dual-chemistry propulsion system for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft

A power control system for a vehicle includes a charge port and a contactor connected to the charge port and including a first plurality of switches. An energy storage system includes a second plurality of switches and one or more battery packs. A bi-directional DC-DC converter is connected between the energy storage system and a plurality of vehicle loads. An electric vehicle includes an electrical system and performs a method of charging the electric vehicle. The electrical system includes a first battery subpack, a second battery subpack, wherein the first battery subpack, the second battery subpack, and an electrical load of the electric vehicle are connected in parallel, and a processor. The processor is configured to control a first connection between the first battery subpack and a first charge port and a second connection between the second battery subpack and a second charge port to charge each of the first battery subpack and the second battery subpack while providing power to the electrical load.

High voltage architecture for multi-port charging system

A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes one or more supplemental protection devices that are connected to at least one of a first contactor, a second contactor, one of N fuses, and one of N vehicle loads. A battery management module is configured to measure and store a plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system and to selectively operate the one or more supplemental protection devices in a coverage gap between first and second coverage areas handled by the first contactor and the second contactor and the N fuses based on a calibration function and/or calibration parameters. A telematics system selectively sends the plurality of state of health parameters for the battery system to a remote server and to receive at least one of a new calibration function and new calibration parameters for the vehicle from the remote server.

Power control system and method for controlling an electric vehicle including one or more supplemental protection devices

A system in a vehicle includes two or more smart battery packs to power drive units of the vehicle to move the vehicle. Each of the two or more smart battery packs includes a battery pack, and a battery management system (BMS) to monitor a state of charge of the battery pack. An energy distribution unit facilitates charge transfer among the two or more smart battery packs.

Vehicle propulsion with multiple battery packs

A system includes a battery system including a plurality of batteries and configured to be selectively coupled to and charged by a renewable energy source and selectively coupled to and charged by a power grid. The system further includes a DC bus shared by a plurality of loads and an energy management system connected between the battery system and the plurality of loads. The energy management system is configured to selectively connect individual ones of the plurality of batteries to at least one of the plurality of loads via the DC bus, selectively connect the battery system to the power grid and disconnect the battery system from the power grid, and selectively connect at least one of the plurality of loads directly to the power grid.

A power control system for a battery system of a vehicle includes a first contactor, a second contactor, N fuses and N vehicle loads. An active sacrificial protection device includes a third contactor and a first fuse. The active sacrificial protection device is connected to a positive or negative terminal of the battery system. A current sensor is configured to sense a measured load current flowing through one of the first contactor and the second contactor. A battery management module is configured to selectively close the third contactor to reduce current flowing through one of the first contactor or the second contactor and selectively open the one of the first contactor or the second contactor after closing the third contactor.

A system to extend a towing range and maneuverability of an automobile vehicle during a towing operation includes a battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) having a vehicle energy pack providing operational energy to the BEV. A powered trailer is releasably connected to the BEV. A trailer module is provided with the powered trailer, the trailer module communicating between the powered trailer and the BEV. A propulsion unit is provided with the powered trailer and is in communication with trailer module and with the BEV using the trailer module. The propulsion unit enhances launch of the BEV and provides an acceleration assist to the BEV.

An apparatus for charging an electric vehicle includes a plug command center having data identifying an availability of an amount of energy which is available for transfer from a first battery system of a first battery electric vehicle (BEV) to a second BEV. A charging adapter provides for energy transfer between a first plug of the first BEV and a second plug of the second BEV. A V2V charging controller communicates data identifying a battery system charge state of the first BEV and a battery system charge state of the second BEV and selects between multiple available charging options.

A cooling assembly according to various aspects of the present disclosure includes a housing, an electronic component, a dielectric coolant, and a cover. The housing includes an interior compartment having a basin region in which the electronic component and the coolant are disposed. The coolant undergoes phase change between a liquid state and a gas state. The coolant is in direct contact with the electronic component in the liquid state. The cover component extends transversely through the interior compartment and is coupled to the body. The cover component is disposed in a direction with respect to the basin region. The cover component at least partially defines a port in fluid communication with the basin region. The cover component is configured to permit flow therethrough of the dielectric coolant in the gas state in at least the direction.

A charging system of an electrical automobile vehicle includes a converter unit and a first energy storage system of within a first automobile vehicle. A charging cable is releasably connected from the first energy storage system to a charging station or is releasably connected to a second energy storage system of a second automobile vehicle. A vehicle charging controller is connected to the converter unit and programmed to communicate with the charging station and to the second energy storage system. A plurality of low-loss switching devices of the converter unit are selectively operated by signals from the vehicle charging controller to position the plurality of low-loss switching devices in an on-state (ON) or an off-state (OFF) to control charging the first energy storage system from the charging station or charging the second energy storage system from the first energy storage system.

Hybrid vehicles and methods of operating the same are disclosed. Example methods may include providing a powertrain for the vehicle, which includes an internal combustion engine configured to provide rotational power to a rotatable input of a transmission by way of a starting device, and an electric motor-generator comprising a rotor configured to selectively provide rotational power to the rotatable input. The method may further include selectively disconnecting the engine from the rotatable input using a disconnect device separate from the starting device, thereby allowing the rotatable input of the transmission to be driven at a speed faster than an output speed of the engine.

Control strategies for a hybrid vehicle

An electric power system includes an energy recovery system that is operable to convert kinetic energy into electric energy at a first voltage. A primary energy storage device is electrically connected to the energy recovery system at the first voltage. A first voltage autonomous driving system load is disposed in a parallel circuit with the energy recovery system and the primary energy storage device. A bi-directional DC-DC converter is electrically connected to the energy recovery system and the primary energy storage device for converting the electric energy between the first voltage and a second voltage. A secondary energy storage device is electrically connected to the bi-directional DC-DC converter at the second voltage. A second voltage autonomous driving system load is disposed in a parallel circuit with the secondary energy storage device.
