A method for reducing extreme loads acting on a component of a wind turbine includes measuring, via one or more sensors, a plurality of operating parameters of the wind turbine. Further, the method includes predicting at least one blade moment of at least one rotor blade of the wind turbine based on the plurality of operating parameters. The method also includes predicting a load and an associated load angle of the at least one rotor blade as a function of the at least one blade moment. Moreover, the method includes predicting a pitch angle of the at least one rotor blade of the wind turbine. In addition, the method includes generating a load envelope for the component that comprises at least one load value for the pitch angle and the load angle. Thus, the method includes implementing a control action when the load is outside of the load envelope.

System and method for improved extreme load control for wind turbine components

A method for optimizing power production of a wind turbine includes determining at least one operational constraint for the wind turbine. The method also includes operating the wind turbine with at least one operational constraint being activated. Further, the method includes varying a tip speed ratio for the wind turbine while the at least one operational constraint is activated so as to maximize a power coefficient of the wind turbine.

System and method for optimizing power output of a wind turbine during an operational constraint

A system and method for protecting a wind turbine from extreme wind gusts includes monitoring a wind speed and a wind direction at the wind turbine. The method also includes determining a wind gust threshold, wherein wind speeds and wind directions exceeding the wind gust threshold, respectively, are indicative of an extreme wind gust occurring at the wind turbine. In addition, the method includes comparing, via a controller, the monitored wind speed or a function thereof and the wind direction or function thereof to the wind gust threshold, respectively. Thus, the method includes implementing, via a controller, a corrective action when the monitored wind speed and the monitored wind direction exceed the wind gust threshold, respectively.

System and method for protecting wind turbines during wind gusts

The present disclosure is directed to a method for controlling a wind turbine having a rotor with a plurality of rotor blades mounted thereto based on a spatial wind speed distribution. The method includes monitoring, via at least one sensor, one or more operating conditions of the wind turbine. The method also includes determining a rotor azimuth angle of the wind turbine. In addition, the method includes determining, via a physics-based model, at least one individual wind speed for one or more of the rotor blades of the wind turbine based on the one or more operating conditions and the rotor azimuth angle. The method also includes determining a spatial wind speed distribution of the wind turbine based on the at least one individual wind speed. Thus, the method further includes controlling the wind turbine based on the spatial wind speed distribution.

System and method for controlling a wind turbine

A wind turbine includes wind turbine blades, a wind turbine rotor coupled to the wind turbine blades, a wind turbine generator coupled to the wind turbine rotor, a wind turbine converter coupled to the wind turbine generator, a controllable brake comprising one or more sources of controllable rotor torque adjustment for providing a first level of torque adjustment, a discrete brake for more coarsely providing a second level of torque adjustment, and a controller programmed for responding to a deceleration event by determining a required torque adjustment for braking, determining a sequence of applying the controllable brake and the discrete brake for driving a combination of the first and second levels of torque adjustment towards the required torque adjustment, and providing control signals for decelerating the wind turbine.

Wind turbine deceleration method and system

Systems and methods for preventing excessive loading on a wind turbine are disclosed. The method includes determining a current wind turbine parameter using at least one operating condition via a processor, the operating condition indicative of wind turbine operation; storing the current wind turbine parameter in a memory store over a predetermined time period; calculating a standard deviation of a plurality of the stored current wind turbine parameters; determining a future wind turbine parameter; calculating a maximum wind turbine parameter as a function of the standard deviation of the plurality of stored wind turbine parameters and the future wind turbine parameter; and, controlling the wind turbine based on a difference between the maximum wind turbine parameter and a parameter setpoint to prevent excessive loading from acting on the wind turbine.
