A method and system to reorganize a storage structure by generating correlation data that represents relationships between storage blocks of a storage structure, generating a block allocation scheme for the storage structure, determining a block reorganization operation, performing the block reorganization operation, and updating a virtual map. In certain embodiments, the system may include multiple host computers, a data storage subsystem, and multiple storage structures. The storage structures may include a hard disk, an array of hard disks, an IBM TotalStorage&#x2122; system, and a hierarchical storage system with RAID.

System and method for storage structure reorganization

A disk image is generated, stored in at least one persistent storage device, comprises at least one software application, and is a root disk image. An inheritance tree comprising a root node associated with the root disk image is created. A new disk image of a disk is generated based on a previously generated disk image associated with a node of the inheritance tree. The new disk image is stored in at least one persistent storage device, and comprises at least one software application of the previously generated disk image and at least one new software application. The new disk image shares at least one data block of the previously generated disk image. A new node is added to the inheritance tree, and is associated with the new disk image. The new node is a child node of the node that is associated with the previously generated disk image.

Disk image inheritance

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for booting a Logical Partition using an external storage device. The method creates a virtual SCSI device assigned to a first logical partition ('LPAR') of a first computer using a virtual I/O server by mapping a LUN of a storage volume to a SCSI ID. The storage volume is located external to the first computer and the first LPAR is configured to share one or more physical processors and one or more physical I/O devices of the first computer with a plurality of LPARs. The method receives a boot request to boot the first LPAR. The boot request identifies the storage volume as a boot device using the SCSI ID of the virtual SCSI device. The method retrieves boot data from the storage volume using a SCSI driver of the first LPAR and boots the first LPAR using the boot data.
