The present coated cutting tool includes a substrate with a coating including a layer of TiAlCrSiN, where x is 0.30-0.50, y is 0.25-0.45, z is 0.05-0.15, and v is 0.10-0.20, x+y+z+v=1. The layer has a cubic phase with a distribution of unit cell lengths within the range 3.96 to 4.22 Å for the cubic cell. The unit cell length range 3.96 to 4.22 Å includes more than one intensity maximum in an averaged radial intensity profile of an electron diffraction pattern.

Coated cutting tool

A coated cutting tool includes a substrate with a coating including a (Ti,Al)N layer having an overall composition (TiAl)N, 0.34≤x≤0.65. The (Ti,Al)N layer contains columnar (Ti,Al)N grains with an average grain size of from 10 to 100 nm. The (Ti,Al)N layer also includes lattice planes of a cubic crystal structure. The (Ti,Al)N layer shows a pattern in electron diffraction analysis, wherein there is a diffraction signal existing, which is shown as a peak (P) in an averaged radial intensity distribution profile having its maximum within a scattering vector range of from 3.2 to 4.0 nm, the full width half maximum (FWHM) of the peak (P) being from 0.8 to 2.0 nm.

A coated cutting tool includes a substrate having a coating including a layer of aluminium nitride, which has a phase of aluminium nitride (P). The phase of aluminium nitride (P) has an electron diffraction pattern, wherein up to a scattering vector of q=8.16 nmthere is at least one additional reflection (R) to any reflection found in the cubic and hexagonal aluminium nitride diffraction patterns.

A method for producing a coated cutting tool includes depositing a 0.5-10 μm nitride layer, which is a nitride of one or more of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Ta, Nb, Si, Cr and Al, onto a substrate followed by depositing Al or Al+Me, further followed by depositing a 0.1-5 μm oxide layer being an (AlMe)Olayer, 0.05≤a≤1, wherein Me is one or more of Ti, Mg, Ag, Zr, Si, V, Fe, Hf, B and Cr, said layers being deposited by magnetron sputtering. Also, a coated cutting tool including a substrate with a coating having the nitride layer and oxide layer. The coating has inclusions of (Al,Me,O) in the oxide layer at the interface between the nitride layer and the oxide layer, and/or a layer of (Al,Me,O) situated in between the nitride layer and the oxide layer.

Method for producing a coated cutting tool and a coated cutting tool

A coated cutting tool including a substrate and a single layer or multi-layer hard material coating is provided. The substrate is selected from cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride (cBN), polycrystalline diamond, steel or high-speed steel. The hard material coating includes at least one layer of gamma-AlO, exhibiting particularly high hardness and reduced Young's modulus. The gamma-AlOlayer of the coated cutting tool is obtainable by means of a reactive magnetron sputtering process using at least one Al target, wherein the deposition is carried out using a reaction gas composition of argon (Ar) and oxygen (O) at a total reaction gas pressure within the range from at least 1 Pa to at most 5 Pa, at an Opartial pressure within the range from 0.001 Pa to 0.1 Pa, and at a temperature within the range from 400&#xb0; C. to 600&#xb0; C.

PVD process for the deposition of AlOand a coated cutting tool with at least one layer of AlO

A coated cutting tool and a process for the production thereof is provided. The coated cutting tool includes a substrate and a hard material coating, the substrate being selected from cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride, polycrystalline diamond or high-speed steel. The hard material coating includes a (Ti,Al)N layer stack of alternately stacked (Ti,Al)N sub-layers. The layer stack has an overall atomic ratio of Ti:Al within the (Ti,Al)N layer stack within the range from 0.33:0.67 to 0.67:0.33, a total thickness of the (Ti,Al)N layer stack within the range from 1 &#x3bc;m to 20 &#x3bc;m, each of the individual (Ti,Al)N sub-layers within the (Ti,Al)N layer stack of alternately stacked (Ti,Al)N sub-layers having a thickness within the range from 0.5 nm to 50 nm, each of the individual (Ti,Al)N sub-layers within the (Ti,Al)N layer stack of alternately stacked (Ti,Al)N sub-layers being different in respect of the atomic ratio Ti:Al than an immediately adjacent (Ti,Al)N sub-layer, and other characteristics.

Wear resistant PVD tool coating containing TiAlN nanolayer films

A cutting tool includes a base body and a coating applied thereto. For providing a cutting tool, having both a hard coating that also exhibits fracture toughness, the coating includes at least one oxide layer deposited in the PVD process, consisting of at least 10 alternating single coats of AlOand (Al, Me)O, where 0&#x3c;x&#x3c;1, wherein Me is selected from one or more of the group of Si, Ti, V, Zr, Mg, Fe, B, Gd, La and Cr.

Cutting tool

A coated cutting tool includes a substrate of cemented carbide, cermet, cBN, ceramics or HSS and a coating of a nitride layer, which is a High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) deposited layer of a nitride of one or more of Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Ta, Nb, Cr, Si and Al, and a HIPIMS-deposited oxide layer being an (AlMe)Olayer, 0.05&#x2264;a&#x2264;1, wherein Me is one or more of Ti, Mg, Ag, Zr, Si, V, Fe, Hf, B and Cr. The oxide layer is situated above the nitride layer. Also, a method is disclosed for producing a coated cutting tool having the nitride layer and oxide layer, the nitride layer and the oxide layer being deposited by a HIPIMS process.

Coated cutting tool and a method for its production

A tool includes a base body of hard metal, cermet, ceramics, steel or high speed steel and a multi-layer wear protection coating deposited thereon by a PVD process. The wear protection coating has a first coat deposited on the base body having a composition of TiaAl(1-a)N, wherein 0.4&#x2264;a&#x2264;0.6, and a coating thickness of 0.5 &#x3bc;m to 4 &#x3bc;m, and a second coat deposited on the first coat. The second coat includes a sequence of 10 to 80 first and second layers alternatingly arranged one on top of each other. Each of the first and second layers has a thickness of 5 to 100 nm. Each first layer includes nitrides of the elements Ti, Al, Cr and Si, and each second layer has a composition of TixAl(1-x)N, wherein 0.4&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.6. The first and second coats have up to 10 at-% of further metals, B, C and/or O as impurities in each layer.

Tool with multi-layer arc PVD coating

A solid carbide milling cutter has a substrate of hard metal and a multi-layer coating deposited at least to surface regions that contact a workpiece during a milling operation. The multi-layer coating includes a single-layer or a multi-layer functional layer deposited directly on the substrate surface and a single-layer or a multi-layer covering layer deposited on the functional layer. The functional layer has one or more layers of TiAlN with 0.3&#x2264;x&#x2264;0.55. The covering layer has one or more layers of ZrN. The functional layer and the covering layer are deposited by HIPIMS, wherein during the deposition of the functional layer power pulses are applied to each sputtering target consisting of material to be deposited, which power pulses transfer an amount of energy to each sputtering target that exceeds a maximum power density in the pulse of &#x2265;500 W/cm.

Solid-carbide end milling cutter having a TiAlN&#x2014;ZrN coating

Tool with main body made of carbide, cermet, ceramic, steel or high-speed steel and multi-layer wear-protection coating applied on the main body using a PVD process. The wear-protection coating comprises at least one layer (A) of TiAlN where 0.33&#x2264;a&#x2264;1 with layer thickness of 20 nm to 3 &#x3bc;m and at least one layer (B) comprising a sequence of at least 4 sub-layers arranged alternately in a stack, of TiSiN and AlCrN where 0.70&#x2264;b&#x2264;0.98 and 0.3&#x2264;c&#x2264;0.75 with sub-layer thickness of 0.5 nm to 15 nm, and optionally further comprises a layer (C) of TiSiN where 0.70&#x2264;d&#x2264;0.98 with layer thickness of 50 nm to 1 &#x3bc;m. The wear-protection coating can have further carbide layers and layers (A), (B) and (C) can contain up to 10 at. % of other metals, B, C and/or O per layer, depending on the process.

Tool with TiAlCrSiN PVD coating

Tool comprising a base body made of hard metal, cermet, ceramics, steel or high-speed steel and a single-layer or multi-layer anti-wear protective coating applied thereon in the PVD process, at least one layer of said anti-wear protective coating being a titanium-aluminum-nitride layer, TiAlN where x+y=1, which layer can contain, according to the process, up to 5% by weight of further metals, characterized in that the TiAlN layer is a multi-coat substructure having a plurality of periodically alternating TiAlN coats (A) where x(A)+y(A)=1 and TiAlN coats (B) where x(B)+y(B)=1, the Al concentration y(B) in coats (B) amounting at most to 70 at. % (y(B) 0.70) and the Al concentration y(B) in coats (B) being from 10 to 25 at. % higher than the Al concentration y(A) in coats (A) (y(B)=(y(A)+0.10) to (y(A)+0.25)).

TiAlN-coated tool

Tool with optional wear-protection coating has, as an outer layer arranged on top of the substrate body or wear-protection coating, a single-layer wear-recognition layer (A) or a multilayer wear-recognition layer (B) comprising at least 4 individual layers arranged one above another, said layer or layers being produced by depositing elemental metals, metal alloys or electrically conductive metal compounds with a PVD process. Individual layer of (A) or at least one individual layer of (B) contain at least two different metals, the wear-recognition layer comprises a region produced by anodic oxidation from the upper surface down to a penetration depth that does not extend over the entire thickness of the wear-recognition layer, and the individual layer of (A) or the at least one individual layer of (B) has at least two different phases before the anodic oxidation and in the regions of the wear recognition layer that are not anodically oxidized.

A target for the deposition of mixed crystal layers with at least two different metals on a substrate by means of arc vapor deposition (arc PVD), wherein the target includes at least two different metals. To produce mixed crystal layers which are as free as possible of macroparticles (droplets) according to the invention at least the metal with the lowest melting point is present in the target in a ceramic compound, namely as a metal oxide, metal carbide, metal nitride, metal carbonitride, metal oxynitride, metal oxycarbide, metal oxycarbonitride, metal boride, metal boronitride, metal borocarbide, metal borocarbonitride, metal borooxynitride, metal borooxocarbide, metal borooxocarbonitride, metal oxoboronitride, metal silicate or mixture thereof, and at least one metal different from the metal with the lowest melting point is present in the target in elemental (metallic) form.

Target for arc processes

Cutting tool has a substrate and a multilayer coating deposited by PVD. The coating comprises a base layer of one or more identical or different layers of a nitride or carbonitride which contains at least aluminium (Al) and a chromium-containing, oxidic functional layer. Attachment of the chromium-containing functional layer is improved by an intermediate layer of one or more oxides or oxide nitrates of the metals Al, Cr, Si, and/or Zr provided between the base layer and the functional layer. The intermediate layer has a cubic structure and the chromium-containing functional layer is selected from chromium oxide (CrO), chromium oxynitride, aluminium-chromium oxide (AlCr)O, aluminium-chromium oxynitride or a mixed oxide or mixed oxynitride of aluminium, chromium and further metals of (AlCrMe, Me)oxide or (AlCrMe, Me)oxynitride, where Me . . . Memeans one or more further metals, selected from Hf, Y, Zr and Ru, and wherein the functional layer has a rhombohedral structure.
