Disclosed herein is a polymer blend comprising a first polycarbonate comprising a first structural unit derived from a 2-aryl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine and a second structural unit derived from a dihydroxy aromatic compound, wherein the second structural unit is not identical to the first structural unit, and a second polycarbonate comprising a structural unit derived from a dihydroxy aromatic compound, wherein the polymer blend has a glass transition temperature of 155 to 200&#xb0; C.; and wherein a test auricle having a thickness of 3.2 mm and molded from the blend has a haze of less than or equal to 3.0 measured in accordance with ASTM D1003-00. A method of making the polymer blend, and articles prepared from the blend, are also disclosed.

High heat polycarbonates, methods of making, and articles formed therefrom

A thermoplastic composition comprises, based on the total weight of the composition: 51-90 wt % polyester, 10-49 wt % ABS impact modifier; 0-20 wt % of multifunctional epoxy compound; 0-40 wt % filler; 0-2 wt % fibrillated fluoropolymer; and more than 0 to 5 wt % of a stabilizer composition. An article blow molded or injection molded from the composition has a multi-axial impact total energy from 30-100 Joules at &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. and a ductility of more than 90%; a permeability of more than 0 and less than or equal to 1.5 g/m-day to ASTM D 471-98 Fuel C, measured after exposure to ASTM D 471-98 Fuel C vapor for 20 weeks at 40&#xb0; C.; an MVR of 1-20 cc/10 min., measured at 265&#xb0; C.; a flexural modulus of greater than 1300 MPa; and retains at least 75% of its initial tensile elongation at break, after exposure to Fuel E85 for 28 days at 70&#xb0; C.

Moldable polyester compositions, processes of manufacture, and articles thereof

A composition, comprising, based on the total weight of the polymer components in the composition, 1 to 40 wt. % of an aromatic polycarbonate, 30 to 98.8 wt. % of a polysiloxane-polycarbonate block copolymer, and 0.1 to 10 wt. % of a polysiloxane-polyimide block copolymer comprising more than 20 wt. % polysiloxane blocks, based on the total weight of the polysiloxane-polyimide copolymer. The compositions provide articles with low haze, high luminous transmittance, and good hydro-aging properties. The articles can further be formulated to have excellent flame retardance, particularly when KSS is used.

Polysiloxane-polycarbonate compositions, method of manufacture, and articles formed therefrom

A poly(arylene ether)-polysiloxane multiblock copolymer is prepared by the reaction of a hydroxy-diterminated poly(arylene ether), a hydroxyaryl-diterminated polysiloxane, and an aromatic diacid chloride. This synthesis overcomes disadvantages of known syntheses of poly(arylene ether)-polysiloxane block copolymers. The poly(arylene ether)-polysiloxane multiblock copolymer is useful for improving the melt processability of poly(arylene ether) compositions.

Methods for the preparation of a poly(arylene ether) polysiloxane multiblock copolymer, multiblock copolymers produced thereby, and associated compositions and articles

A composition is described, comprising: (a) from 20 to 80 wt % of a polyester; (b) from 5 to 35 wt % of a flame retardant phosphinate of the formula (I)[(R)(R)(PO)&#x2014;O]M&#x2003;&#x2003;(I),a flame retardant diphosphinate of the formula (II)[(O&#x2014;POR)(R)(POR&#x2014;O)]M&#x2003;&#x2003;(II),and/or a flame retardant polymer derived from the flame retardant phosphinate of the formula (I) or the flame retardant diphosphinate of the formula (II), wherein Rand Rare identical or different and are H, C-C-alkyl, linear or branched, or C-C-aryl; Ris C-C-alkylene, linear or branched, C-C-arylene, -alkylarylene or -arylalkylene; M is an alkaline earth metal, alkali metal, Al, Ti, Zn, Fe, or boron; m is 1, 2, 3 or 4; n is 1, 2, or 3; and x is 1 or 2; (c) from 1 to 25 wt % of a melamine polyphosphate, melamine cyanurate, melamine pyrophosphate, and/or melamine phosphate; (d) from more than 0 to 25 wt % of a polyetherimide; and (e) optionally, an additive.

The method comprises forming a reaction mixture comprising at least one substituted or unsubstituted phenolphthalein, at least one substituted or unsubstituted primary hydrocarbyl amine, and an acid catalyst; and heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of less than 180&#xb0; C. to remove a distillate comprising water and form a crude 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine product; where the 2-hydrocarbyl-3,3-bis(4-hydroxyaryl)phthalimidine has a formula: where Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen and a hydrocarbyl group, and Ris selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen, a hydrocarbyl group, and a halogen.

Method for purifying 1,1-bis(4&prime;-hydroxy-3&prime;-methylphenyl)cyclohexane and methods of producing polycarbonates therefrom

The disclosure relates to articles using polycarbonates produced by a melt transesterification polymerization method using bis(hydroxyaryl)cyclohexanes. Such polycarbonates have suitable glass transition temperatures and outstanding dimensional stabilities, thus making them particularly useful for making articles possessing high temperature stability, particularly for use in optical articles such as high density optical data storage and recordable media.
