A switch for switching packets from a plurality of sources. The switch includes a memory in which portions of packets are stored. The switch includes a transferring mechanism which transfers predetermined portions of a packet to the memory as the predetermined portions are received. A method for switching packets. The method includes the steps of receiving portions of a packet at a transferring mechanism of a switch. Then there is the step of transferring predetermined portions of the packet to a memory of the switch as the predetermined portions are received at the transferring mechanism.

Long packet handling

A switch for switching packets includes a port card which receives packets from and sends packets to a network. The switch includes fabrics connected to the port card which switch the packets. Each fabric has a memory mechanism. Each fabric has a mechanism for determining a length of each packet received by the fabric and placing a length indicator with the packet so when the packet is stored in the memory mechanism, the determining mechanism can identify from the length indicator how long the packet is and where the packet ends in the memory. A method for switching packets having a length includes the steps of receiving a packet at a port card of a switch. Then there is the step of sending fragments of the packet to fabrics of the switch. Next there is the step of receiving the fragments of the packet at the fabrics of the switch. Then there is the step of measuring the length of the packet at each fabric from the fragments of the packet received at each fabric. Next there is the step of appending a length indicator to the packet. Then there is the step of storing the packet with the length indicator in a memory mechanism of the fabric. Next there is the step of reading the packet from the memory mechanism. Then there is the step of determining where the packet ends from the length indicator of the packet.

Transferring and queueing length and data as one stream

A switch for switching traffic from N sources to M destinations, where M and N are each an integer greater than or equal to 2. The switch includes K segments, where K is greater than or equal to 2 and is an integer. Each segment receiving traffic from R of the N sources, where 1&lE;R<N and is an integer, and all K segments in total receiving traffic from the N sources. Each segment collecting and queuing traffic from the respective R sources. The switch includes an arbitrator which receives information from the destinations regarding if they can receive data or not, and from the K segments about the traffic they have for different destinations. A method for switching traffic from N sources to M destinations, where M and N are each an integer greater than or equal to 2. The method includes the steps of receiving traffic from the N sources at input ports of K segments, where K is greater than or equal to 2 and is an integer. Each segment receiving traffic from R of the N sources where 1&lE;R<N and is an integer. Then there is the step of sending traffic from any segment to a destination through an output port of an arbitrator which connects to each segment. An arbitrator. A segment.

Method and system for switching using an arbitrator

A switch of a network connected to a switch control processor. The switch includes port cards which receive packets from and send packets to the network. The switch comprises a switch control processor for providing control information. The switch includes fabrics for switching the packets. The fabrics receive control information from the switch control processor but all the fabrics only implement the control information at a same logical time when each fabric receives a control initiation signal from one of the port cards. Each respective fabric continuously operating on packets before, during and after each respective fabric receives the control initiation signal. A method for switching packets. The method includes the steps of receiving packets at a port card of a switch from a network. Then there is the step of sending fragments of each packet to fabrics of the switch. Then there is the step of distributing control information from a switch control processor to the fabrics of the switch as the port card continues to receive packets. Next there is the step of receiving a control initiation signal from a switch control processor through the network at the port card. Then there is the step of sending the control initiation signal from the port card to the fabrics. Next there is the step of implementing the control information at each fabric only after the respective fabric receives the control initiation signal so all the fabrics implement the control information at the same time.
