A magnetic recording head with an overall planar design and tight dimensional control of throat height and notch width is achieved below the gap. Writer poles include very high magnetic moment material on both sides of the writer gap. Additionally the pole tips are shaped to provide high field with good spatial gradient for optimal writing conditions, thereby extending the capability of longitudinal recording heads for high density and high frequency applications.

A magnetic writer having an air bearing surface for confronting a surface of a rotating disc is disclosed. The magnetic writer includes a bottom pole and a top pole. The top pole includes a first top pole portion and a second top pole portion connected by a top pole extension. The top pole extension, which preferably has a uniform width at the air bearing surface, orients a magnetization of the first top pole portion substantially parallel to an air bearing surface of the magnetic writer. The bottom pole includes a base pole and a notch pole. The base pole is recessed from the air bearing surface to prevent or reduce fringe erasure fields. The notch pole, which abuts the base pole and extends from the air bearing surface to at least a magnetic throat height of the magnetic writer, has a magnetization oriented perpendicular to the air bearing surface.

A beveled writing pole includes a top portion, a beveled portion, and a throat portion. The top portion has an end that defines a writing pole tip. The beveled portion adjoins the top portion and has a bevel that extends from the writing pole tip and increases a thickness of the writing pole proximate the pole tip. The throat portion is formed of the top and beveled portions and has tapered sides that extend from the writing pole tip and increase a width of the writing pole proximate the writing pole tip. A method of forming the beveled writing pole is also presented.

A reader formed in a data transducer includes a first shield, a read gap, a second shield, a maanetic compensation layer, and a non-magnetic spacer layer. The first shield is formed of a multilayer comprised of a layer of a first material. The second shield is spaced apart from the first shield by the read gap. The magnetic compensation layer is formed in the first shield and has a coefficient of thermal expansion of less than the coefficient of thermal expansion of the first material. The non-magnetic spacer layer separates the first material layer and the compensation layer of the first shield.

A transducing head formed upon a slider has an air bearing surface, a top magnetic pole, a shared magnetic pole, a write via, and a shared pole extension. The write via is positioned opposite the air bearing surface and extends between the top magnetic pole and the shared magnetic pole. The shared pole extension is positioned adjacent the air bearing surface and extends from the shared magnetic pole toward the top magnetic pole. The shared pole extension is separated from the top magnetic pole by a write gap. The shared pole extension is formed of a multilayer having a layer of a first material having a high magnetic moment and a layer a second material having a coefficient of thermal expansion substantially similar to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the slider material.

A magnetic head slider having an air bearing surface is used for reading and writing data from a magnetic medium. The magnetic head includes a substrate having a disc opposing face bounded by a leading face, a trailing face, and first and second sided edges. The slider includes an end layer positioned upon the trailing face of the substrate wherein the basecoat has a disc opposing face and is comprised of a material having a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than a coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate. An air bearing pad is formed solely on the disc opposing face of the end layer. A transducing head is formed in the air bearing pad and exposed at an air bearing surface.

Slider basecoat for thermal PTR reduction

A data transducer having an air bearing surface is used to reduce thermal pole tip protrusion. The data transducer includes a write via and a top pole having one end adjacent the air bearing surface and an opposite end contacting the write via. The yoke extends from the write via in two directions towards the air bearing surface and is recessed from the air bearing surface. The yoke has a first end and a second end. The data transducer includes a shared pole adjacent the air bearing surface and co-planar to the yoke wherein a gap is located between the shared pole and the yoke. A shared pole extension extends between the shared pole and the first and second ends of the yoke.
