An automatic driver-dimming-mode detection protocol includes subjecting, via a dimming bus, a luminaire driver to a first driver control signal of test analog voltages. Forcing the luminaire driver, via the first driver control signal, into a power output response that includes: (a) a constant output power mode, or (b) at least two discernable different output power levels. Detecting a dimming mode of the luminaire driver. The step of detecting the dimming mode of the luminaire driver includes: measuring, via a power metering circuit, a power metering measurement corresponding to the power output response; and based on the power metering measurement of the luminaire driver being: (a) the constant output power mode, determining that the luminaire driver is a digital dimming mode type (e.g., DALI), or (b) the at least two discernable different output power levels, determining that the luminaire driver is an analog dimming mode type (e.g., 0-10V).

A lighting driver includes a processor configured to generate a compensator signal based on a first signal during a constant current mode and based on a second signal during a constant voltage mode. The first signal corresponds to a current through an LED light source coupled to an output of the driver, and the second signal corresponds to a voltage at the output. The driver further includes a controller to control, based on the compensator signal, an amount of power provided to the LED light source. The driver also includes a constant current source circuit to be coupled to the LED light source. During the constant current mode, a flow of the current through the constant current source circuit is disabled, and, during the constant voltage mode, disabling the flow of the current through the constant current source circuit disables a flow of the current through the LED light source.

A method of increasing modulation of a visible light signal. The method can include receiving a signal that corresponds to the visible light signal, where the visible light signal has a magnitude. The method can also include adjusting, by a controller and based on the signal, a dimmer level of a dimmer by an amount, where the amount is proportional to the magnitude of the visible light signal, and where the dimmer level adjusts an output of a driver circuit. The visible light signal and the output of the driver circuit can be combined into a power signal and sent to one or more light sources. The one or more light sources can use the power signal to generate a light output that includes a visible light communication signal that is received by a receiver.

A method of adapting output power of a driver to conduction duration of a phase-cut dimmer includes determining a first conduction duration of an electrical signal generated by a phase-cut dimmer. The first conduction duration corresponds to a dimmest setting of the phase-cut dimmer. The method further includes storing a first value corresponding to the first conduction duration and determining a second conduction duration of the electrical signal. The second conduction duration corresponds to a brightest setting of the phase-cut dimmer. The method also includes storing a second value corresponding to the second conduction duration and generating intermediate values that are between the first value and the second value. The method further includes adjusting an output power of a driver based on a conduction duration of the electrical signal, the first value, the second value, and the intermediate values.

Adaptive lighting driver

A method of adjusting output power of a lighting driver includes setting output power of the driver to a maximum output power of the driver, the maximum output power of the driver corresponding to a brightest setting of a dimmer. The output power of the driver is adjustable by adjusting a dim level setting of the dimmer. The method further includes adjusting the dim level setting of the dimmer to a new setting that is different from the brightest setting of the dimmer. The new setting of the dimmer corresponds to an amount of the output power of the driver that is less than the maximum output power of the driver. The method also includes associating, by the driver, the brightest setting of the dimmer with the amount of the output power of the driver that is less than the maximum output power of the driver.

An alternating current ('AC')-powered light emitting diode ('LED') driver is described herein for driving one or more arrays of series-connected LEDs. The LED driver includes a first transistor that includes a collector-emitter path connected in series with at least one LED of an array of series-connected LEDs. The LED driver also includes a second transistor configured to selectively activate the first transistor based on a level of current through the array of series-connected LEDs. The array of series-connected LEDs has a turn-on voltage.

A dimming circuit for a light-emitting diode fixture includes a dimming switch, a signal transfer device, and a timer. The dimming switch can include a dimming switch and generate a current at a first voltage level, where the current corresponds to a dimmer setting of the dimmer switch. The signal transfer device can include an input communicably coupled to an output, where the input of the signal transfer device is electrically coupled to the dimming switch, and where the output of the signal transfer device generates a signal at a second voltage level based on the current received by the input. The timer can be electrically coupled to the output of the signal transfer device and to a LED driver, where the timer generates a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal based on the signal, and where the timer sends the PWM signal to the LED driver.

In one aspect, a method for detecting arc faults with a dynamically-changeable slope threshold is disclosed. The method may include monitoring a current waveform to determine a peak amplitude of a half cycle and a slope at a zero crossing of a half cycle. An arc fault counter may be incremented if the maximum amplitude of the half cycle and the slope at a zero crossing are greater than a preset magnitude threshold level and the dynamically-changeable slope threshold, respectively. In another aspect, a decay of the amplitude of a predetermined number of half cycles of the current waveform is measured and an arc counter is not incremented, even if the conditions would otherwise indicate an arc counter increment, when the decay is above a decay threshold for greater than a predetermined number of half cycles. An arc fault detection apparatus adapted to carry out the methods, and systems including the arc fault detection apparatus are disclosed, as are various other aspects.

Methods, systems, and apparatus and for detecting parallel electrical arc faults

A circuit tests the health of a ground-neutral transformer within a ground fault circuit interrupter. This test can include testing both the ground-to-neutral detection circuitry and the differential current detection circuitry. The test circuit provides a conductive path through the respective cores of a differential transformer and the ground-neutral transformer of the GFCI device. A closed loop induces current from the differential transformer, which creates a current imbalance through the differential transformer. In a properly working device, the circuit breaker will trip, confirming the health of the ground-neutral transformer portion of the GFCI.

Systems and methods for testing ground fault detection circuitry

In accordance with one aspect the present disclosure is directed toward a method for detecting arc faults on a power line. The method may include monitoring power signals associated with a power line and filtering the power signals to produce a high frequency signal and a low frequency signal. A mask signal may generated based on the low frequency signal, and the high frequency signal may be analyzed to extract a broadband portion of the high frequency signal. A fault counter may be incremented if the magnitude of the broadband portion is approximately greater than a first threshold level. A fault counter may be decremented if the magnitude of the broadband portion is approximately less than the first threshold level. A trip signal is provided to a switching device associated with the power line if the fault counter exceeds a predetermined fault limit.
