The present disclosure relates to compositions comprising a copolymer derived from a vinyl aromatic monomer, a (meth)acrylate monomer, an acid monomer, and a copolymerizable surfactant and compositions comprising the same. The (meth)acrylate monomer can be selected from a monomer having a theoretical glass transition temperature (Tg) for its corresponding homopolymer of 0&#xb0; C. or less or a hydrophobic (meth)acrylate monomer. In some embodiments, the copolymer is further derived from an organosilane. The copolymers can have a theoretical glass transition temperature (Tg) from &#x2212;60&#xb0; C. to 80&#xb0; C. and a number average particle size of 250 nm or less. The compositions can be used to prepare compositions such as coatings that have improved water resistance, blush resistance, and/or resistance to hydrostatic pressures. Methods of making the copolymers are also provided.

Binder compositions and methods of preparing and using the same

An asphalt-based, cold paving/coating formulation that provides increased flexibility with respect to the choice of aggregate types, asphalt emulsion types, type and amount of the surfactants used to produce the asphalt emulsion, asphalt emulsion pH's and application temperature's than conventional cold paving/coating formulations while providing good mix times and curing behavior. The asphalt-based formulation can be formed by mixing water; an asphalt emulsion; at least one first compound in aqueous solution selected from the group consisting of alkali metal salts, alkali metal hydroxides, ammonium salts, and ammonium hydroxide; at least one second compound in aqueous solution selected from the group consisting of Group IIA salts, Group IIIA salts, Group IIIB salts, copper salts, zinc salts, cadmium salts, manganese salts, iron salts, cobalt salts, and nickel salts; and optionally aggregate. Also, a method of preparing an asphalt-based formulation using these components.

Asphalt-based formulations and method of making and using the same for paving and coating applications

The present invention is a method of incorporating a water insoluble organic chemical into a styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion and the resulting styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion. A styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion is provided comprising an aqueous phase and a disperse phase, with the disperse phase including particles of styrene-butadiene rubber. An organic solvent that is miscible in water and the water insoluble organic chemical are added together to the styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion. The addition of the water-miscible organic solvent allows the water insoluble organic chemical to pass from the aqueous phase into the disperse phase thus limiting separation of the water insoluble organic chemical from the latex dispersion. The resulting SBR latex has increased properties over conventional latices that use the same amount of the water insoluble organic chemical but that do not include the water-miscible organic solvent.
