A power supply to an LED-based street or area light is operated to provide a dimming control signal, which is in turn processed by a circuit to produce 0-10 V DC, pulse width modulated (PWM) signals, or any other suitable signal that can variably control LEDs within the light. The on/off power interruptions could be provided, for example, from a photoelectric control, a timer circuit, or a pre-programmed or manually controlled timer/contactor. The signal to the on/off device could also or instead be initiated by an RF or power line carrier signal to cause the power interruptions.

Light dimming control

A communication system that provides communication of information between an end user device and a remote end user. The system includes a communication node mounted on the upper part of a utility pole, and drawing its power from the utility pole through a standard NEMA Locking 3 Pole Receptacle, and adapted to communicate with a nearby user device using the low-power communication protocol, such as the ZigBee protocol (ANSI IEEE 802.15.4) or Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology, and also adapted to communicate with a neighborhood mesh network of nodes mounted on utility poles. The neighborhood mesh network is capable of communicating, through a regional computer network, with the remote end user.

Remote monitoring and control system

A system and device for using the power provided to street and area lights or other outdoor installations to power auxiliary devices which require a power supply which is different from line voltage for their power requirements. A device adapted to be connected to the NEMA three pole receptacle on a street or area light which converts the line voltage provided to the outdoor installation into a power form required by one or more auxiliary devices which cannot directly use the line current or voltage. The appropriate electrical connector for the auxiliary device may be included. Among the conversions: line voltage up to 480 volts alternating current converted to a user's specified voltage for WiFi, radios, surveillance cameras, traffic monitoring, other monitoring, security cameras, other communications, and UPS systems; DC voltage for the above applications and others; and power over ethernet conversion (for example, 48 volt direct current, 420 milliamperes).
