Tne tensions in an extruded sheet of a thermoplastic can be relaxed by passing the preheated extruded sheet over a conveyor where it is supported on a cushion of heated air so as to maintain it at an elevated temperature while the tensions in the sheet are relaxed.

Sheet stress relaxation

A process comprising winding polyvinylbutyral interlayer sheet at a controlled low tension reduces blocking at the core of the roll and minimizes stretch variations within the roll and storing the roll until use at a temperature below 15.degree. C.

Production of polyvinylbutyral sheet rolls

Disclosed herein is an improved process for finishing a die roll which is used to prepare interlayers for laminated safety glass. The improvement comprises the blasting of the roll with glass beads after the conventional grit blasting steps and before chrome plating. Interlayers prepared using rolls made by this process are characterized by having surfaces which are more printable without sacrificing the surface roughness required to prevent blocking of the sheet and to facilitate de-airing of laminates prepared from the interlayer.
